Like the group’s best work, its amorphous and vaguely defined nature makes it something you can explore again and again and still find something you hadn’t noticed.

Átta is an album which demands to be listened to in its entirety, a 56 minute journey which ebbs and flows magnificently. It’s exactly what you’d expect from Sigur Rós, with a few surprises thrown in, and without doubt one of the more welcome comeback stories of the year.

While not the project's most mind-bending or boundary-pushing album, it’s their most stunningly gorgeous, and a successful, timely countermeasure to the symbolic cover art depicting a rainbow in flames.

This might not be the most urgent Sigur Rós album, but it'll surely be remembered as one of their most gorgeous. For a band so well known for all things beautiful, beauty for its own sake is hardly a problem.

‘ÁTTA’ is at least the band’s best album since 2005’s monolithic ‘Takk’ made them a household name, and at most a record that gives Sigur Rós plenty more reason to exist in adding some pure and natural soul to this cold and unfeeling world.

Sigur Ros’ world-building abilities haven’t been dulled by a decade of group inactivity – each moment is laden with colour, and mood.

    Átta feels surprisingly unengaging.

Perfectly crafted sounds, one of the best Sigur Rós albums, if not the best.

A powerful and moving album (or rather experience), among the band's finest. Out of all the songs, I highlight SKEL, a true masterpiece. Expand

There is an admirable size to this project that it kind of makes you stick to it, kind of wanting to watch it and, at least, see it move and breath and evolve and, you know, happen, but with no eyes on the matter, this just sounds like a very long soundtrack to a sensible emancipation of two objects, there is not even a climax to this story, just a long breath that changes in its own rhythm, a very steady rhythm, with reasons that fail to exist. This sensible ambientation would've been more appreciable if there would be a narrative on the production, you know, like an adventure that the very same music offers, and not just a happening that sounds beautiful and careful.
