It feels like the turmoil of the late 2010s has galvanized Spiral Stairs into making his most direct and stylistically adventurous (which is a quite different thing than experimental music) music yet.
  2. Apr 16, 2019

A fairly straight-up radio friendly rock album.
  3. Uncut

Having helped define '90s alt.rock with Pavement, Kannberg here turns felicitous rock classicist. [May 2019, p.34]

Hyp-No-Tized finds room for tasteful micro-arrangements of piano and saxophone, and, while winding lead guitar riffs are aplenty, their subtleness is refined and perfectly executed. While his past may haunt him, Kannberg's future as Spiral Stairs is promising.
  5. Apr 16, 2019

On his own, he’s not a particularly compelling songwriter. The album aspires to cult-classic obscurity and lands in the realm of the tolerably generic.

The album is, however, still ramshackle and oddball where it counts. [Jun 2019, p.86]
