Don't know if I should label this as jazz-rock, smooth jazz or Neo-Soul. What I do know is that this project has a groove that I don't want to finish. 45 minutes from the friendship between drummer Yussef Dayes and guitarist, singer and producer Tom Misch. Thir jam sessions culminated on making this album two years after Misch's debut. The too brief, purely instrumental “Sensational” is the best track, with suggestions of Weather Report’s jazz rock expansiveness. But the general impression is gimmicky and lightweight – effects without causes. [May 2020, p.66]

Misch's fluid songwriting is still to the fore, as on the title track's loose-limbed shimmy, heightened by an uplifting string arrangement. [Jun 2020, p.102]

What Kinda Music also features an unlikely collaboration with acclaimed MC Freddie Gibbs. Sonically, it fits perfectly: the Misch / Dayes project is not far off from Gibbs’ main production collaborator Madlib.
