Tom Misch’s vocals return towards later in the project for stunning standout ‘Last 100’. The piano chords brighten the mood whilst a raspy yet soft vocal line glides down, with quick-fire guitar peppered throughout, while album closer ‘Storm Before The Calm’ rounds off the mood with bittersweet nostalgia.

What Kinda Music also features an unlikely collaboration with acclaimed MC Freddie Gibbs. Sonically, it fits perfectly: the Misch / Dayes project is not far off from Gibbs’ main production collaborator Madlib.

Misch's fluid songwriting is still to the fore, as on the title track's loose-limbed shimmy, heightened by an uplifting string arrangement. [Jun 2020, p.102]

Not only do Dayes and Misch offer an alluring marriage of virtuosity and pop, the album feels like the best recent example of Brian Eno’s theory of scenius as opposed to genius: the theory that it takes community and collaboration to spark something incredible, rather than the work of one gifted individual.

What I do know is that this project has a groove that I don't want to finish. 45 minutes from the friendship between drummer Yussef Dayes and guitarist, singer and producer Tom Misch. Thir jam sessions culminated on making this album two years after Misch's debut. If you need something to relax ("The Real"), dance ("Last 100") or workout ("Sensational"), this will fit well into your playlist.

Personally, some of the songs were good, but I couldn't give them as much impact as Geography. But apart from that, the album itself is excellent in completeness. Full Review »
