Delicate Steve uses their African-inspired rhythms as a foundation for more forward-thinking experimentation. That their experiments manage to be successful without sacrificing basic tunefulness makes Wondervisions a winning debut record.

Like the guileless ballers on the screen, Delicate Steve's got surprisingly smooth moves, and the album lets you see the wonder of each one. It goes for the layup every time, sinks it, and you'll have no problem cheering along.

Delicate Steve's debut album, Wondervisions, treads beautifully this line between meaningless emotion and unfeeling precision.

In all seriousness, Wondervisions isn't hard to handle. There's nothing abrasive here to worry about, and the variation in structure and theme is exciting enough.

Delicate Steve flaunts every loose end, every unfinished seam. It might be testing to find the threshold of musical coherence; it might just be having a well-plotted lark. But if Delicate Steve's music were any more polished, it wouldn't be half as intriguing or anywhere near as much fun.

As a debut, Wondervisions makes for a great mission statement from Delicate Steve, showcasing the songwriters' ability to craft engaging and exploratory instrumentals while still being accessible and fun.
