Although Yawning Abyss is a tad more conventional than Mr Dynamite, it’d be fair to assume Creep Show will remain an acquired taste for some. But for those who have no qualms about stepping into their sometimes oppressive, sometimes sleazy-sounding world, you may not want to step back.

Unmistakably human touches are the key to the album’s balanced sound – still ominous and complex, but with less of an underground bunker feel than previous outings.

At once more serious and more playful than Mr. Dynamite, Yawning Abyss homes in on what Creep Show do best, and the ways they skewer corruption and indifference are a treat for fans of any of the artists involved and for anyone else who enjoys eloquent, darkly humorous electronic pop.

Creep Show’s second album Yawning Abyss reaches further into your soul, and once there, it really gets to work, rummaging furtively and stealthily metastasising. The more spins, the more you submit to its charms.

Or I love what he does, or I completely hate it, and this is not the exception to that rule. While I loved and stayed surprised by "Boy from Michigan" (2021), 2018 was a hard year for him with what he did in "Love Is Magic" (2018) and his debut with Creep Show: "Mr. Dynamite" (2018), two of the projects I struggled the most and I practically heated to an extent. "Yawning Abyss" is a little bit of a self warning to what to expect in this new album, and it is nothing new, nothing important, nothing really entertaining, just a bunch of guys experimentation with ambient sounds, upbeat tunes and some retro and futuristic notes and feels. I understand the passion of music for the sake of art, but the sake of enjoyment might prove to be equally or more important than that. I hope great things from John Grant, I just would like him to not have a lot of scrub in his yard, if you know what I mean. Expand
