Westerman may be less accessible than either artist, but his latest is just as notable in its ambition. ‘An Inbuilt Fault’ is an acquired taste, but well worth the effort.

An Inbuilt Fault is a natural progression in Westerman's young career – a little more austere and timidly experimental. Like a similarly quiet revolutionary Amen Dunes, Westerman is carving out his own identity beyond his influences.

An Inbuilt Fault's subtlety will reward patient listeners, as repeat listens reveal more of its emotions and sonic detail.

Bigger, bolder, and even more exploratory than his 2020 debut Your Hero Is Not Dead, An Inbuilt Fault.

There's a lot to like, and though "Pilot Was A Dancer" runs close to standard, indie folk-pop fare, the title track, with its Fairport-ish twangling and braided harmonies, and the wintery, Croz-styed "Give" compensate. [Jul 2023, p.36]

An Inbuilt Fault never unravels its hypertension into something as easy as “Confirmation (SSBD),” which makes it both more interesting and less satisfying listen that its predecessor. But that’s the fine line Westerman works in. An Inbuilt Fault plays with that line, and it’s tightly wound as ever.

Conformed with this new album of Westerman. He might not be the most incredible thing that is happening to music right now, but there is suchConformed with this new album of Westerman. He might not be the most incredible thing that is happening to music right now, but there is such a heart full of a fresh perception of music that is very moving. "Your Hero Is Not Dead" became the next phrase I need tattooed in my body because he sings and plays with such a spirit that, at least, I could not help shake off how warm he, his lyrics and his music made me feel. A new, very organic project of an artist that has no comparison. Full Review »
