For his first solo album, Liam Gallagher goes a long way toward establishing himself apart from brother Noel and the rest of Oasis. His most successful tracks here evoke Nashville rather than Manchester.

The swaggering beasts of Wall Of Glass and Bold kick it off and Greedy Soul waves a musical truncheon in your face as producers Greg Kurstin and Dan Grech- Marguerat find the jugular on songs powered by riffs, choruses, hooks and lashings of attitude to keep up with their swaggering frontman.
  3. The glammy, foot-stomping country bounce of tracks like ‘Greedy Soul’ make sure this isn’t a hoary dad-rock indulgence, but a totally 2017 rock record with its sights set high.

What gives it freshness and conviction is Liam’s performance.

The upbeat rockers certainly pull no punches. ... Better still, some gentler tunes reveal his more vulnerable side. [Nov 2017, p.95]

As You Were stands as proof that rock's most charismatic general is back on active service and spoiling for trouble. [Nov 2017, p.102]

Now in his middle age, he's a richer, nuanced singer than he was during Oasis' heyday, yet he's retained his charisma and, unlike his brother, he favors color and fire in his records, elements that not only enhance this fine collection of songs but make this the best post-Oasis album from either Gallagher to date.

Gallagher is never going to win awards for originality, but he has definitely progressed musically with this solo debut.

As You Were finds the singer sounding as self-assured and focused as someone with a string of records under their own banner.

If the album is a few steps shy of his old band's best, it has Gallagher writing like he means it and singing like his dream isn't over.

Liam has opted for a far more straightforward, audience-pleasing rock ‘n’ roll record but with plenty to make it sound fresh and alive.

Solidly crafted but with few surprises. [Nov 2017, p.28]

The biggest and most welcome surprise is that As You Were is not only a cohesive, fluid record, but shows that at age 45, “our kid” isn’t ready to go away just yet.

Though As You Were kicks off with stadium-sized rock songs, some of the record’s most memorable moments arrive on its ballads.

This is a great record! Fans of Oasis in particular, if not White Album-era Beatles in general, will find a lot to like here. Yet the albumThis is a great record! Fans of Oasis in particular, if not White Album-era Beatles in general, will find a lot to like here. Yet the album manages to sound thoroughly modern, and not simply an exercise in nostalgia. Amateur guitar playing Oasis fans will love this album, because you will want to learn every song. Track 5, "For What Its Worth", is Liam's apology to Noel, which at first spin brought me to tears. Lyrics are heart felt, spilling out the truth of his mistakes and his demons. Thank you for this album Liam. Full Review »

Having said that, this is a strong set of Liam songs in the styles Liam prefers. For brevities sake: I like it more than any Beady Eye and a good amount of latter day Oasis.

Now, I kinda hate to do this, but it's Oasis so I have to: Chasing Yesterday still wins for best post Oasis Gallagher release, but if the preview is any indication, this record could prove better than Noel's next one.
