As You Were is practically all comfortable, predictable, Oasis-without-Noel comfort food.

As convincing as Liam Gallagher is when he audaciously boasts that he's "got the Midas touch" early on in the album, As You Were doesn't ever quite turn to gold.

A set of songs that, if not remarkable, are at least an upgrade.

‘You Better Run’, while perfectly adequate, has the aura of ‘pub back room’ to its chugging riffs; it’s fine, but it’s largely filler. In general though, As You Were is almost certainly the best thing Liam’s offered us since he parted ways with his big bro.

The final result is an agreeable enough listen.

If As You Were is not an unalloyed triumph, then nor is it the stuff of career-ending disaster. Its failings are the failings you could level at pretty much every Oasis album, its sprinkling of highlights an improvement on most of their output since the mid-90s.

Following the largely insipid twinklings of his Beady Eye, As You Were suggests that, given the right conditions and appropriate collaborators, Liam Gallagher could become a more potent force than expected--especially if he could broaden his musical outlook beyond such predictable parameters.

Over-produced but under-written, the combined cast of co-writers and producers have failed to knit together a cohesive whole. Plenty of these songs are pleasant enough, but there’s very little to mark an artist in their prime.

The diluted authorship leaves him floundering amid songs that manage to be overly complex and fiercely indistinct at the same time.

Subtlety is an early casualty, lyrics and riffs hitting with all the grace and charm of a sledgehammer.

This is a great record! Fans of Oasis in particular, if not White Album-era Beatles in general, will find a lot to like here. Yet the albumThis is a great record! Fans of Oasis in particular, if not White Album-era Beatles in general, will find a lot to like here. Yet the album manages to sound thoroughly modern, and not simply an exercise in nostalgia. Amateur guitar playing Oasis fans will love this album, because you will want to learn every song. Track 5, "For What Its Worth", is Liam's apology to Noel, which at first spin brought me to tears. Lyrics are heart felt, spilling out the truth of his mistakes and his demons. Thank you for this album Liam. Full Review »

I wasn't expecting much in the way of hearing something far off from what Liam's been delivering since Little James and that's what I got.I wasn't expecting much in the way of hearing something far off from what Liam's been delivering since Little James and that's what I got. Having said that, this is a strong set of Liam songs in the styles Liam prefers. For brevities sake: I like it more than any Beady Eye and a good amount of latter day Oasis.

Now, I kinda hate to do this, but it's Oasis so I have to: Chasing Yesterday still wins for best post Oasis Gallagher release, but if the preview is any indication, this record could prove better than Noel's next one.
