One of the best records of their 30-year career. Neither prog nor doom, Katatonia sound like no one else.

Deft arrangements, vintage heaviness, classic power. [Jun 2020, p.89]

Steeped in striking colors but never losing sight of the gloom and grey continuum Katatonia have mastered throughout their discography, City Burials is emotionally arresting, ceaselessly atmospheric, and a milestone release that serenely ebbs and flows across a myriad of intricate, stratified soundscapes.

City Burials is not a reinvention, but it does contain periodic re-engagement with the steely dynamics of heavy metal. Renkse's excellent songwriting, coupled with his best overall viocal performance, serve to energize Katatonia, who remain vitally creative in their third decade.

Much of the album is minimalist in its approach, allowing Jonas Renkseā€™s vocals to guide the way against a kaleidoscopic soundscape of soft melodies that feel almost ethereal.

Many of the songs sound the same and there's no really interesting progression in the sound.

I liked the last 2 songs more than the rest but that definitely does not save the album.

Simply superb! Absolutely love this album. First two songs, Heart Set to Divide and Behind the Blood are some of their best tracks to date!

Devoid of any flavor or personality. "City Burials" is nothing compared to their early work. It is painfully boring, poorly written, and redundant.
