Darlings is warm and expansive and sexy, and feels like a more intimate affair than his debut, 2007’s ‘Spirit If...’.

Drew's songs still zone out, but the focus here is on a stripped-down luster somewhere between occasional bandmate Feist and the National.

Equal parts lo-fi sketch-like song structure and buffed-to-a-shine ’80s soft rock, these 12 songs are evidently personal and, at times, thematically obscure.

A few verses drag out too long, but Drew’s storytelling remains firmly in the foreground.

The best parts of Darlings make you work, as Drew does, to peel back the surface and dig into what’s there but some of it just leaves us with quiet, impenetrably sweet sounds that repetition can’t quite crack through.

Darlings is a concrete mixer full of ideas, although it’s tricky to pinpoint if Drew’s actually laid the foundations of a decent record.

Unfortunately after [the first two tracks] the album settles into a post-coital snooze that it doesn't really wake from.

Although things quieten down on the pseudo-R Kelly front as the record progresses, the squirm factor never totally vanishes. [Apr 2014, p.106]

Not really a Broken Social Scene record, but that's not a bad thing. As a first true solo effort, Darlings succeeds in discovering life after BSS. Stand out tracks so far, Good Sex, You In You Were, And That's All I know. Full Review »
