With Devastator, Phantom Planet have crafted an album that deftly undercuts their hooky West Coast optimism with a bitterly cloudy beach bum sadness. You can almost hear the bright pop sound of their youth echoed back through the hazy din of waves returning to shore; California here we come, right back where we started from indeed.

Devastator is a fine and fully-formed piece of work, bringing the band rushing headlong into the present, but maintaining all the best elements of their past work.

The four-piece deliver their familiar brand of Cali power-pop, at once glossy and heart-on-sleeve. [Jun 2020, p.37]

Maybe the lyrics fall a little on the simplistic side, which is frustrating considering the themes here can be pretty bleak despite the sunny and airy sound. But overall, Devastator is a more than enjoyable return for a band that always felt deserved more attention.

It’s so rare to have an album command your attention to be heard giving you this hectic sense of urgency eager to hear the next song begin as the previous song fades out. The only other album I felt like that was with Fiona Apple’’s new album...flat out brilliant. These 2albums are the year’s best so far for me. Expand

In many spots the charm isn't as strong as it used too but the songwriting is pretty solid and the production gives the album a much more modern feel. I wouldn't say it is as good "The Guest" but it is a solid comeback. Expand
