MagnetMay 10, 2013What's great about English Little League very much preaches to the choir. But it's nevertheless clear this crew is ready to welcome some new converts once more. [No. 98, p.51]

MojoMay 20, 2013GBV's only LP of 2013 and it's a good'un. [Jun 2013, p.95]

May 2, 2013English Little League is a red wheelbarrow full of awesome.
-
Apr 30, 2013English Little League is decidedly overstuffed at 17 songs, and the one-off sketches that were somehow endearing on albums like Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes come off as simply filler here. Still, it remains a pleasure to hear GBV doing what it does best: cranking out song after song.

May 2, 2013So there we have it, more of the recent same and sufficiently good enough to keep the good ship GBV sailing onwards. However, a little more variety and a few more Tobin Sprout songs next time around would certainly help to prevent any risk of drifting into more ponderous waters.

Apr 29, 2013It's patchy, but when English Little League is good, it's great.
-
May 1, 2013Triumphant as the return itself has been, the records themselves have really only skirted triumph. English Little League is no different.
-
May 2, 2013English Little League just misses greatness, but if it’s not the best album they’ve put out since early 2012, it’s certainly the most interesting, the most willing to take risks.
-
Apr 30, 2013English Little League, like most of Pollard’s crop from the past decade, holds a few really great tracks, but is mostly missable.

UncutApr 29, 2013It all kinda works. [Jun 2013, p.73]

Under The RadarApr 29, 2013Melodies are often masked by the instrumentation, and there are very few, if any, big sing-along choruses. But every Guided By Voices album has a few true gems, and English Little League is no exception in that regard. [Mar-Apr 2013, p.92]

Apr 29, 2013As for English Little League, the three records the band did in 2012 are all stronger collections, but this is hardly a failure. One just has to search a little harder to find the good songs this time.

May 24, 2013English Little League starts with a memorable and high-quality opener in “Xeno Pariah,” a compact showcase of everything the band does right.... They don’t maintain that high quality--the off-key “Sir Garlic Breath” is just painful--and more often than not, the songs fall into good-not-great territory.
