The leap from bedroom-dweller to teenage riot instigator has been a swift and fruitful one, and what could be considered derivative is genuine in every sense. Circumstance might dictate that bedroom songwriting is back on the cards for Bea as the slow crawl to the return of live shows continues, but there’s a rock-solid foundation for the years to come.

Fake It Flowers is a true evolution, a record that’s stronger and fuller than beabadoobee’s earlier EPs and exemplifies the ongoing growth of her artistry.

The diary-entry nature of Bea’s songwriting - over twelve tracks she dips into hair dye as empowerment (‘Dye It Red’), self-harm via blistering highlight ‘Charlie Brown’, and a not-particularly-well-hidden reference to her boyfriend in ‘Horen Sarrison’ - makes the fuzzy, bubblegum grunge of ‘Fake It Flowers’ a perfect brooding soundtrack.

Though it doesn’t deliver the promised 2020 twist on the Nineties formula, beabadoobee’s debut album is a terrific new addition to the “bubblegrunge” genre.

The songs on Fake It Flowers are far from superfluous. Rather, it’s evident that Kristi revives the sound—which was predominantly represented by straight white men—in order to infuse it with her own life and experience as a Catholic school dropout and daughter of immigrants.

She may not be the most compelling lyricist among her peers, and her melodies place her squarely in the middle of the pack, but when she’s at her best, her sparkly songs reach incredibly catchy heights and exude clarity about a confusing time in one’s life. With Fake It Flowers, she’s on the cusp of something great, and only time will tell which side she falls on.

Just as judging the past from the present can be a fraught undertaking, weighing up the throwback 90s indie du jour by the standards of the decade itself is probably unfair too, but you wish Beabadoobee could muster a little more period-perfect surliness.

Bea Kristi was born in Philiphines, grew up in London, and, with only 20 years old, she won a big public and acknowledgment thanks to her vision and influences in Rock. I declare myself as an immediate and proud fan of her music since this, her album debut, helped me to unleash my intensity and sensibility with a certain harmony. The balance that Beatrice achieves in this album is to be admired because her Grunge and Garage soften the angriness embedded in the heart and exploits the warmth in the hugs that we should give ourselves to remember how much we worth. Her lyrics add an idea of maturity that fearlessly expresses the thoughts that transit between the will and the need. In the end, this Pop Rock feels so intimate and cozy that, suddenly, always can be the appropriate time to dance and sway with this musical dilemma, as rampant as tender.

I don'tThis is a decent traditional pop album but one thing I really should have learned by now is to never ever trust a 5 star NME review. I don't know which teenage bedroom bloggers write for them these days but this is the second time I've been stung by them. The last was a 5 start review of the 1975 I read a few years back. That's not to say this isn't good. It is. beabadoobee is catchy pop in the style you might have come across on an American Pie soundtrack from 20 years back or so. Production is decent, songwriting isn't bad but lacks thematic variety. It has a bit of substance to it and it sounds like it has some semblance of personality which is in short supply in pop these days. Expand

Lyrically, it can be crude [which makes it tolerable]. Sonically, it's a good start. This girl has a lot of potential to show and there are some songs to prove it; the production of "Back To Mars" and "Horen Sarrison" are very well. She's still finding her own identity, and I'm glad she didn't pursue the "death bed" fame because that song is pretty disappointing.
