Go to School is an artistic statement on a grand scale, and it cements their reputation as world-class songwriters. It’s a once-in-a-generation epic.

It’s the kind of complicated release that rewards repeated listens, as the story of a disaffected chimp translates into songs about the loneliness and longing for acceptance that linger even as high school fades away.

Plentiful showstopping melodies and an authentic dedication to their influences--Todd Rundgren even plays Shane's dad--will see Go To School run and run. [Oct 2018, p.86]

The result is that it all, somehow, sounds bizarrely natural. Landing in the unique middle ground between the ’70s warmth of Todd Rundgren (who lends guest vocals as Shane’s dad, of course) and Little Shop Of Horrors, Go To School is a genuine original.

Featuring contributions from Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Brian and Michael's father Ronnie D’Addario, Go To School is a true beauty and a classic in its own right.

The results are bizarre and at times a little confusing, but it's a unique piece of work, beautifully written, with a jewelers eye for detail.

The album is dazzling in its ambition, not least because the Lemon Twigs are in earnest.

Go To School is a highly ambitious album and some may be wary of the concept, however, if you unpack it, there’s a touching tale within that can resonate with all.

Thanks to their guileless sincerity and boundless invention, The Lemon Twigs manage to pull it off. [Sep 2018, p.111]

Overall, Go To School is a blast, a joyous, ridiculous journey that treads a perfect line between silly, funny and heart-breaking. [Oct 2018, p.33]

Magnificent, opulent, bizarre, and wholesome, Go To School is unlikely to be remembered as a hit-filled album (opposed to Do Hollywood) but as an important stepping stone in the rock'n'roll rite of passage instead, the one that unmistakably distinguishes good musicians from one-in-a-million geniuses.

Lemon Twigs commit wholeheartedly to the bizarre narrative that Go to School is built on. Leaving no ridiculous tangent or exaggerated flourish unexplored, the result is a larger-than-life spectacle grown from strange but excellent songwriting.

While the Lemon Twigs’ sound is far older than their years, this set of concerns is remarkably age-appropriate as they enter their 20s and look toward the future.

In the end, the love you take from Go to School will be equal to the tolerance you have for an even more undiluted version of The Lemon Twigs. Your call.

The 15 songs feel overloaded with glam-ragtime-Vaudeville rockers. Still, it’s hard not to cheer when This Is My Tree sees the long-suffering antihero returned to his natural habitat.

Go To School, feels less like a night on Broadway and more like being dragged along to an amateur performance at your local village hall. It’s charming and full of heart, but you’ll be grimacing all the way through it.

Go To School is a misstep--the sound of talented young musicians over-reaching to the point of unlistenability. [Oct 2018, p.93]

While the D'addario brothers are extremely talented musicians their choice to make a broadway musical was not the right one. It was overly ambitious and isn't what we needed or wanted from them. What we needed was for them to expand on Do Hollywood and make kick ass rock songs. I know these kids grew up on broadway and were actors before they were musicians but that doesn't mean they need to bring broadway into their music. It's just not what I was looking for as a fan. I wish the album was more of "Queen of My School" and less "Born Wrong/Heart Song". Full Review »
