The Lone Bellow stands as one of the most consistent bands of the last 20 years. Across Half Moon Light, the trio ventures outside their usual musical box, alongside producer Dessner (the man behind 2015’s Then Came the Morning), to provide richer, poppier, and bolder textures. Yet it is never at the expense of their lyrical bite.

These three-part harmonies and killer songwriting mix light and dark to muster a complex ode to memory, a call for hope, and an exercise in empathy, yet the overriding result is joyous. Careful planning and years of work went into this project that breathes a spirit of collaboration and freedom beyond the meticulous decisions about instrumental textures.

Half Moon Light's much-needed manifesto of hopefulness comes with the addition of uplifting lyrics further designed to keep up our spirits on dark days. [Mar 2020, p.30]

There are touches of roots rock and a distinct – maybe all-too-obvious – influence derived from Paul Simon and the slick R&B moves he incorporated in his mid-'80s solo work. At its best, though, and for the most part, the music is simple and beautiful and understated.

This album is a bold step into fresh creative ground for the Lone Bellow, but they seem to still be settling into their new musical home.

It's where Elbow and Springsteen intersect. [Mar 2020, p.96]
