As his ex-1D crew continue their own solo careers, Horan maintains his position near the top of the pack with yet another relatable collection of emotive vignettes about everyday love.

2017’s Flicker fermented a folkier, more organic sensibility, and despite Heartbreak Weather’s soaring ambition, he roots himself to lyrics that sprout from similar emotional earth.

    Even with a bruised heart, he's a charmer. [Apr 2020, p.87]

The glossy results lack any particular character. Peppered with hooks and catchy melodies, everything sounds like something you might have heard somewhere before, which in the case of Ed Sheeran soundalike single No Judgement you almost certainly have.

‘Heartbreak Weather’ pads its way through every different phase of relationship-based grief, inevitably letting some moments of catharsis feel more impactful than others. It isn’t an entirely lost cause, but one to build upon for a more inspiring future all the same.

After all the sentimental rigamarole, it’s tough to come away from Heartbreak Weather feeling any closer to Horan. He spends too much of the record bouncing between sounds and songwriting concepts to feel distinct.
  7. 40
Horan is impossible to dislike, forever existing on the right side of cheesy, but the result is a record almost entirely stuck on safe mode. You can only hope its stronger moments hint at better things to come.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Heartbreak weather is an excellent album. It creates an entire context and atmosphere of what a heartbreak looks/feels like. The name of the album already introduces that idea. Heartbreak weather symbolizes the mix of emotions involved and Niall, through the album, approaches the subject from many different perspectives. Tracks like new angel and arms of a stranger talk about the getting over phase while tracks like black and white and nice to meet ya show the excitement and even a little inocence from when you are on a good place in yout relationship. Those changes of point of view make the album fun and dynamic. In terms of lyrics the album is also amazing, as we can see, for example, in dear patience, where Niall personificates a feeling and has a conversation with it in an extraordinary well written song. Basically, Niall is a storyteller and he does it very well: with a clear concept, he is really able to emerse the listeners into the situations he talks about and that´s what makes the album so involving. My only reservation is about the linearity of the story, wich I think could have been better done. Despite the concept is very clear, the sense of time, cause and consequence can be a little lost, wich could easily be fixed just by changing the order of some songs like no judgement, that would make more sense in the beginning of the album than in the end since the start with black and white (the song heartbreak weather is more like a presentation of the concept) expresses the joy while the relationship is good and the end with still symbolizes the melancoly of admitng that getting over is hard. Summarizing, heartbreak weather is an outstanding involving album and Niall is definitely in a better place as a solo artist than he has ever been. Hope to hear more from him soon and excited about what is coming next. Expand

The album is basically: Ed Sheeran meets One Direction. So... it’s bad and really cheesy.
