The Julie Ruin have moved closer to the show tunes influenced half of punk, and further from the grunge influenced half. In its honest mapping of the experiences of being a women involved in music scenes though, it is consistent with the very best of their previous work.

Practically every moment of Hit Reset feels as important as it is brilliant. With the possible exception of 'Time Is Up' (a perfectly good song, just not up to the standard of the rest of the album), it feels damn near flawless.

Any Hanna-related project is prone to vanishing beneath her mighty specter, but the deeper collaborative process that went into Hit Reset shines through.

There is far more variety on Hit Reset than you suspect the casual ear is going to give it credit for. The biggest talking point on Hit Reset, though, is that it finds Hanna on the lyrical form of her life--and that’s saying something.

With Lyme disease in abeyance, these 13 new songs fizz and rage with a mixture of girl-group sass (key track: Rather Not) and surf-garage buzz.

A racing sense fun propels much of The Julie Ruin’s latest, and it’s a more refined step forward from the debut.

As far as follow-ups go, the Julie Ruin have hit their mark squarely with this oddly hooky, and totally unique, release.
  8. The result is a record that’s as fun as it is furious, and as confrontational as it is cool.

The Julie Ruin’s second full-band album, Hit Reset, slides with similar grace [as “Rebel Girl”] between the personal and political--between funny (or sad) polemic, and sad (or funny) pop romance.

Hit Reset is a deliciously rowdy work in which Hanna flames negligent friends, cyber-bullies and idiotic lovers. [Aug 2016, p.77]

Hit reset is stronger overall, because here The Julie Ruin fixes the spotlight on its raison d'etre, a woman who, in her own words, "can play electric guitar while shaving my legs in a moving car." [Aug 2016, p.94]

While Mr So and So shows the gig perv no mercy, elsewhere Hanna’s bonehead-nailing, predudice-lancing manifesto reverberates, as ever, with humanity and truth.

Hanna has actually upped the ante. In many ways, this is the singer's most personal and musically diverse album.

Hit Reset is commendable not because Hanna is a pioneer in the punk world, but because, after all she’s been through, she still has the vigor and passion to be a worthwhile participant.

While the music of The Julie Ruin may not have as much of the anger and purpose that colored her earlier work, it feels like some of her most personal music yet, a reclamation of herself as a musician.

It's often hard for living legends to make new material that's more than an echo of their most groundbreaking work, but those who hear Hit Reset without knowing Hanna's catalog should find it as charming as any super fan would.
