A rhythmically dense album that suggests Carey’s ever-evolving sound is in its prime stages.

An album you can get lost in. [Mar 2018, p.24]

This is his third solo album, and it’s well-written, breathtakingly pretty and as edgy as a cue ball.

Ultimately, the album sounds confidently beautiful. While some may not be as memorable, songs like "Meadow Song" make this album one of S. Carey's best.

Hundred Acres’ environment can occasionally border on the too-cozy and tender, and, as has been the case on previous records, certain songs simply wind down more than they come to any conclusion. Still, Carey ably shepherds the whole sentimental journey.

As a whole, Hundred Acres is a pleasing listen with a warm-hearted, pastoral feel, even if its nuances sometimes get lost in the cracks.

We know from songs like “Alpenglow,” from Range of Light, that he’s able to express real emotional grit in his songs. Carey gets there occasionally on this album, as when he restates his marital vows on “True North.” Too often, though, Hundred Acres is content to be pleasant.

This time out, Carey sheds the vital to prioritize the simple, and simple melodies aren't substantial enough to fill A Hundred Acres.

Beautifully arranged and produced, "Hundred Acres" is one of the prettiest folk albums you'll hear. That said, a lot of the album's strengths are in the deep textures and overall feel of the record rather than the individual songs. S.Carey has delicately filled every blank space canvas when recording this. Stripped down to the bones, I'd question how much magic would be left but I guess that's not the point of the record. "Rose Petals" and "Yellowstone", coming early in the album are my favourites. Full Review »

Carey is one of those albums that, in my opinion, has to be listened to in its entirety from start to finish, preferably alone and with headphones. Full gorgeous instrumentation, heavenly melodies, and incredible depth and honesty lyrically, it is one of the most impressive albums I have ever heard. At times it feels opulent and unreal because of its soft melodic grandeur, yet its simplicity and straightforwardness targets straight to the heart if one cares to truly listen. You just need to listen to Fool’s Gold and its lyrics once to know that S. Carey poured his heart into this album. And you just have to listen to that song once to realize that some creative geniuses out there can turn their sorrow into something soft, absolutely poignant, and heartbreakingly beautiful. Emotional and brilliant are understatements. Full Review »
