    Cottrill is a master at penning lyrics that make you feel like you’re listening to hushed secrets from a friend, but she also has a knack for crafting melodies and rhythms that make you really feel what she’s going through in any given song.

    For someone so young, Clairo has a clear grasp of the conundrums faced by people the world over: the difficulty of asking for help in an age that sees such requests as a weakness. Her aural apathy allows her to gain her listeners' trust and respect, because nothing conveys control, and therefore power, quite like a cool exterior. But, once roped in, said listeners then face the forthright lyrics that reveal Clairo as someone without all the answers.

    It’s simultaneously a gratifying and frustrating listen. A lot of the homespun charm of ‘Pretty Girl’ has been jettisoned. The synths have clearly been given an upgrade. The drums sound expensive. There are musicians here who can play, and are probably on union pay scale. But no amount of major label gloss or ill-advised interposing guitar licks can disguise Clairo’s irresistible melodic gift, and strangely haunting/haunted voice.

    A very beautiful and lowkey/chill album. There is no weak songs in this album, and it has its fair share of amazing songs as well!

Clairo fails to do anything interesting vocally, as there is little variation to be found across her performances on this album. None of the production really stands out either, and this album is jam packed with pretty weak melodies and cord progressions (see Alewife, Impossible, North, Sofia, etc). While there is nothing offensively bad about this album, which keeps it from an even lower rating, there is too little that stands out.… Expand
