It’s a spiritual war, even on Metacritic. Kanye keep doing God’s work, you’re doing so much good with your music. We needed this album

Kanye's new album is devoid of emotion and talent. It lacks in every category from the lyrics "You're like Chick-fil-a on a Sunday." to the basic music compositions that have been heard before. Skip it, mute it, listen to something else.

This is another masterpiece of Kanye West. He never produced the "same" album twice. He always reinventions himself and doesn't care what other people think about it, he does what he wants to. never made mainstream music. He truly is the greatest artist of all time.

Maybe the lyrics are not amazing, but the vibe, the music is so creative. I think it is around the level of KSG and TLOP despite not being as lyrical or abstract

Another great album by Mr West. The gospel element is something new to hip-hop and once again Kanye has changed the game. This is an album similar to 808s that will give birth to new artists.

This album is a work of art and grows on me every listen. Production is amazing and the songs offer a new take on Hip Hop records and an infusion with gospel music. When taking it in without prejudice and with the recommend purpose it clearly reaches its goals and provides a musical and spiritual experience to behold.

Kanye did it again he made a Masterpiece and the people disliking it are snakes.

I'm not a hater. In fact, I think Kanye has released some of the fantastic albums of the century. 808s and MBDTF are classics in my book! However, this is tragic. The lyric about chick-fil-a is absolutely abhorrent, and the only real highlight here is Kenny G's solo. Also, why is it 27 minutes long? It feels rather lazy at that length.

I think it also helps watching Kanye’s recent interviews to see where he’s coming from. I can see however how this album pisses off so many people, Kanye has been doing interviews about same people for around 2 years now. Hopefully in a few years people will see the brilliance in this album, like the brilliant ‘808’s & Heartbreak’. Production is the absolute best part, from the epic tribal drums on "Selah", to the wavy atmosphere on "Water", to the futuristic synth on "On God", to the absolutely gorgeous gospel sample on "God Is", all the way to the great saxophone solo by Kenny G on "Use this Gospel. That same track also features the rap duo Clipse making a historic comeback. Both Pusha T and his brother Malice have great verses on this track.

Everything we need, water, follow god, god is and hands on are some of Kanye's best songs in a decade ever since MBDTF. The main problem with JIK is use this gospel which has good lyrics but the production value on it is terrible, it sounds disorienting and isn't good on the ears. It actually seems as if Kanye decided that the sound of an open car door would be a good idea for making a song but it really isn't, no one wants to hear that. Never a middle ground answer, always the two extremes. This is the sign of true art. Kanye isn’t really doing anything drastically different than what he’s always done. Soul samples? ✓ Religious lyrics? ✓ ✓ ✓ Kinda corny lines like “you’re my chick-fil-a”? ✓ Kanye has always had some corny lines in his songs like in 808s & Heartbreak when he refers to his love as a RoboCop. Or when he says in Yeezus “Eating Asian **** all I need is sweet and sour sauce.”

Another thing with Kanye music is it has a tendency to have mixed reviews upon release both critically and commercially. But also has a tendency to be considered a classic album a few years later. This has happened with 808s & Heartbreak, Yeezus, The Life of Pablo, and it’s starting to happen with his 2018 album Ye. Overall, I think this is a good album that will be considered a classic in a few years. Religious lyrics often age very well. It’s cool to see Kanye still doing what he does at age 42.

I applaud the fact that he took this risk.

My favorite song off the album so far is Hands On, due to the immense soundscape produced on the track.

What a mess. Not an album for Kanye fans, not an album for fans of gospel. I'm not sure why this was made.

I just can’t stand this new Kanye West with this new personality who’s a Trump Republican supporter, and at the same time “Gospel”. Like Lana Del Rey said “Kanye West is dead”. I heard the album and it’s just TRASH!!! I couldn’t finish the whole album because it’s THAT BAD! Don’t waste your time. 0 rating

The album in it of itself is not revolutionary. It does not contribute to culture or art, is it redundant and a step back for Kanye.

Classic Kanye with infinitely more depth. Most of these comments are shallow and inaccurate from those who didn't approach this work with an open mind to begin with... or clearly had a political axe to grind. You have to listen through it a couple of times to get the message and understand the flow. As you do, it gets better and better until you realize it is a complete masterpiece. My only complaint is the last track wasn't long enough. You tee'd it up and left it Ye! finish it on next. The thing is most christian music is lazy and uninspired when it should be anything but. This is easily the best gospel album I have heard where essentially every verse was honest and has weight. You can feel toll of fame, pain, addition, lament and contrast his sorrow with redemption and concern for his family. Its even more powerful if you listen to his earlier work, in succession, up to this point. Proud of Kanye for doing this. Blessed by his early living out of a true saving faith. Encouraged by the importance he placed on theological accuracy (the best he knew at this point) and, praying for his continued sanctification and for his wife, kids and family to follow close behind through seeing the change in his life that only Christ can bring Expand

Its sad to see this record ruining Kanye's discography, cementing him in a position where there will never be another stellar record like Yeezus or MBDTF. This is the start of Kanye's downfall (well... kinda spawned by 'Ye') and most likely nearing towards the end of his music career. As a Kanye fan, it is hard to rate this album so low but in all honesty, for a Kanye album, this album sucks. However, weighing this album against general music, it is fairly average. So... I'll be giving Mr West a 5/10 for his 9th studio record 'Jesus Is King'. Expand

A few weak patches, like Closed on Sunday, and some rough vocals but otherwise a strong album from a veteran of the art. Largest complaint is how small it is.

This album is the worst thing Kanye has ever produced, it's corny, incoherent, and feels rushed even though it was delayed for a year. The real slap in the face was that I had avoided listening to any leaks until after I listened to the album. I just don't get how Kanye could have listened to yandhi and decided to scrap it for this steaming pile of sh*t of an album.

A really great album both instrumentally and in all other aspects that is let down by its lyricism, as the the lyrics appear insincere, down right awful and confusing like on the track 'Closed on Sunday' and sometimes just lacking of Kanye's usual charm displayed through his lyricism. I hope it can be edited and improved like that of Life of pablo.

The music isn’t all completely terrible, but the new Kanye is awful. I just don’t buy this whole Christian act. And this whole Trump supporter act? It’s awful. At times the music on here is decent, but the lyrics tend to be cringy and feels more like they should be sung at bible camp by a bunch of Trump supporters. Only two tracks stands out here, Selah and Follow God. The rest are such a bore to listen to. What a fall from TLOP (don't even bother about Ye). Even Follow God felt like it was ended abruptly and doesn't flow well into the next track. This is pretty bad. The lyrics are really corny, the mixing is incredibly inconsistent. The mastering sounds like they ran it through a limiter and called it a day. The yandhi leaks, even incomplete, are better than this.

Some sonically interesting ideas don't hold it together. Only thing that makes this better than The Big Day is it's mercifully short.

His reunion with frequent collaborators belies a rich history of discovering and championing new voices. This ostensible distance from which Kanye preaches reveals King’s true tension: Kanye, like Kendrick on DAMN., is asking for our prayers, while also distancing himself from our hands and our mouths. And it doesn’t work. ... He has artistically lost track of his audience and himself in its midst.

He’s hung up on Jesus rather than pneumatic women. It’s hard to tell if that’s an improvement, but it doesn’t seem like a regression either. ... An album with zero fat, dense in at least three senses, two of them positive. [Dec 2019, p.60]

As with every Kanye album, there’s some magnificent production on a majority of “Jesus Is King” courtesy of Pi’erre Bourne, Timbaland and Boogz, among others. ... Kanye just seems like he’s in his own world; disregarding what’s going on around him. Other times, Ye’s writing delves into eyerolling contradictions and ego-driven intentions.
