  1. Reg has matured a lot, and Jet Black is easily the most dynamic and upbeat record of his career.
  2. The album's production and Vermue's economical, buttoned-down songwriting offer plenty of tonal and genre variation, but everything still feels like it's hitting the same mark.
  3. Even more encouraging is that, vocally, Reg at last sounds up to the challenge of the musical variety displayed on this album.
  4. Too many of the songs settle into lackluster grooves, and pairing those grooves with Vermue's style-over-substance vocal affectations makes the album less than memorable.
  5. Under The Radar

Gentleman Reg returns with a fine collection of whip-smart pop ditties. [Spring 2009, p.76]
  6. While the closing tracks have some flashes of interest, they repeatedly fall into the same saccharine McCartney-esque cliches, making the last chapter of the album as unremarkable as the first.
  7. It all just cries out for a little more oomph.
