The Darkness’ return to form is a welcome surprise in these apocalyptically drab times.

Last of Our Kind is the sound of a band unencumbered; it's an album that was probably as much fun to make as it is a joy to listen to.

It might well be that The Darkness' finest moments are not behind them, after all. [30 May 2015, p.54]

This is the sound of a band fired-up and focused, and the result is a Darkness album to be proud of.

There are reasons to cheer aside from survival--cultish single "Open Fire," "Mighty Wings" and the Rush-like title track. [Jul 2015, p.73]

Last of Our Kind is nothing groundbreaking, but it shakes the Earth with pumping fervor.

Their fourth, Last Of Our Kind, includes some formulaic hard rock, Cheap Trick and Starship apery and flat-out misses. But it has its moments, to be sure.

There's nothing here to match their gonzo 2003 hit I Believe In A Thing Called Love.... But there's still laugh-out silliness. [Jul 2015, p.92]

Justin Hawkins' vocal histrionics can, at times grate, but for suckers of old-school guitar riffs and songs about the Viking invasion of East Anglia, there's much to enjoy. [Jul 2015, p.104]

This is their darkest record yet, but it's saved from drudgery by a heavier sound delivered with furious energy.

It’s hard to knock stompers like ‘Roaring Waters’ either, but the vanilla title track and the plodding ‘Hammer & Tongs’, come off as cheesy, even for this lot.

Last Of Our Kind has heavy and abrasive moments that are heavier and more abrasive than anything in The darkness discography. [No. 121, p.53]

The band sorely lacks a frontman of true rock-god proportions to transcend the silliness.

Ultimately, it turns out The Darkness are at their worst when doing an impression of themselves, which is exactly what Last Of Our Kind is.

This album is the darkness really sticking to what they love rather than bowing down to the pressure of producing something that will chart. Some brilliant guitar work on this album, some of the riffs are infectious and as always some nice solos that are not overkill but really add to the songs. You need to listen to the album a few times to really appreciate it in my opinion. Full Review »
