It takes a few spins for the subtle charms of Life Is Fine to fully kick in, but it rewards patience. It may not quite match the sustained brilliance of seminal '80s albums Gossip and Under the Sun, but this is another fine effort.

Despite the number of instrumentalists, the album sounds personal. Kelly is front and center, singing in a conversational voice or playing in an intimate manner.

It's a long time since Kelly drank at this well, and Life Is Fine is a deep, deep draft. [Sep 2017, p.90]

Kelly has lost none of his facility for wry lyricism or deadpan melody. [Sep 2017, p.32]

Life Is Fine boasts some of Kelly’s best lyrics in years.

Life Is Fine doesn't break new ground for Kelly, but it also shows he doesn't need to come up with new concepts or mess with his formula in order to make a memorable album.

While it may not be the long overdue and richly deserved breakthrough to a mass global audience, it’s another reassuring set of solidly crafted, intelligent adult pop.
