All totaled: a trunkload of what at this point are barroom folk standards, played so vividly you'll be bellowing along.

It's simply marvellous, an unalloyed joy from first to last, with Robbie Robertson's finely wrought storytelling songs augmented by a few well-chosen covers.

Most of us missed the party 42 years ago, but now it's boxed for our infinite pleasure. [Nov 2013, p.99]

These discs should be played loud, but not to ramp up the cinematics. Rather, they should be played loud to highlight the intimate details, to convince you just how uniquely, impossibly good these guys were when they played together.

For the most part, however, [Bob Dylan's] contributions feel like a step down from the level of those of his former bandmates, emphasising just how far they had come.

Although this box is not perfect--it's hard not to wish there were no duplications on the first two discs, or the last two--it is nevertheless a mighty testament to the Band at the peak of their powers.

The sheer wealth of material--over four hours' worth--seem designed to only excite the tastebuds of tourbus veterans. [Nov 2013, p.120]

I think, this is the best live album ever recorded ( Rock Of Ages) ! Masterpiece!

My indoctrination of the Band came through watching The Last Waltz many times and wearing out its soundtrack on the turntable. ThisMy indoctrination of the Band came through watching The Last Waltz many times and wearing out its soundtrack on the turntable. This collection, from same era, has a lot of overlap, but a broader song selection, though, IMO, not as good track selection and not the same energy as TLW.. Dylan, who was brilliant on TLW, is vocally obnoxious here, but hearing "Like a Rolling Stone" live makes up for it in some part. Band diehards will eat it up; for newbies, I'd recommend watching TLW and getting its soundtrack instead. Expand
