  • Summary: Siouxsie Sioux of the rock band Siouxsie & the Banshees and The Creatures releases her debut solo album.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 18 out of 24
  2. Negative: 0 out of 24
  1. Nearly thirty years after her debut with the Banshees, Siouxsie can still sneer and storm as fiercely as ever.
  2. 80
However, even with the musical trappings of contemporary conventional rock, Siouxsie’s voice and look, blessedly, remain the same.
  3. You could say the closing, piano-and-strings showcase 'Heaven and Alchemy' borrows from some of them. But as a whole. Mantaray proves it's much more the other way 'round.
  4. Spin
    70
Slight echoes of her past work seep through, but mostly she's casting a refreshing new spell. [Nov 2007, p.125]
  5. I have finally arrived at the conclusion that this record somehow actually works. Quite well in fact, so much so that by the time 'Here Comes The Day' reaches its glittering, Broadway-themed conclusion, one almost forgets whose name is on the front cover.
  6. Under The Radar
    60
While the successful execution of her solo pop record is admirable, and Mantaray stands favorably poised to be the next shining example of British “quality” pop music....Artists of their ilk are always more exciting and satisfying when they and their music are a bit freakish. [Fall 2007, p.81]
  7. Mojo
    60
Mantaray, however, displays a passion and conviction that shows an artist unhappy to rest on her numerous laurels. [Sep 2007, p.102]

Powerful, haunting, Siouxsie is in top form. She is uncompromising, focused, and stronger than any other female in music today.

The Ice Queen Melts....sort of. Strident but triumphant...Siouxsie blasts back with the industrial stomp of "Into a Swan," chills to the bone The Ice Queen Melts....sort of. Strident but triumphant...Siouxsie blasts back with the industrial stomp of "Into a Swan," chills to the bone with "Loveless," glammily slinks up on the dance floor in "About to Happen," and infuses heartfelt emotion into "Sea of Tranquility" and "If It Doesn't Kill You." The worst thing about the album is that it is far too short but when Siouxsie is at her best, and in _Mantaray_ she has recaptured that form, she leaves you wanting for more. Expand

Yeah! Really great voice and material. Should make Karen O realize she will never be on Siouxsie's level no matter how many times she Yeah! Really great voice and material. Should make Karen O realize she will never be on Siouxsie's level no matter how many times she steals from her! Expand

Not as good as her best, but she's still charismatic.
