Dec 17, 2014Ot overall the compilation, with all its good intentions, pales in comparison to the originals and will only strengthen the urge to hear Russell's wonderful songs again after listening to this well-meaning but flawed collection.
-
The WireDec 16, 2014It's a startlingly consistent album--dazzling, baffling and sprawling in the same way that Russell and his work was. [Dec 2014, p.50]

MojoNov 19, 2014Nothing here truly ventures into the unexpected as [Russell] did, but there was only one Arthur Russell. [Dec 2014, p.89]
-
UncutNov 11, 2014Skip the sanctimonious turns by vegan singer-songwriters and there's enough here to make it worthwhile. [Dec 2014, p.83]

Nov 5, 2014A truly wonderful record that deserves attention, as does the work of Arthur Russell.

Nov 5, 2014At its worst, Red Hot + Arthur Russell shows up the limitations of the cover-album-as-form, but at its best, it's a thrilling tribute to a none-more-singular artist.
-
Nov 5, 2014Robyn and Hot Chip re-create the ebullient joy of Russell’s disco productions, while Devendra Banhart and Phosphorescent find the quiet heart of his ballads.

Nov 5, 2014Russell's recordings are enormously idiosyncratic, and a lot of Master Mix's contributors try to normalize his music: sanding off his bristling electric cello tones, hammering repeated phrases into choruses, singing with dramatic intonation in place of his ethereal reserve. (The major exception is Lonnie Holley, whose four brief "interludes" here abstract Russell pieces further.) That often works just fine.
