Transforming states and changing perspectives are once again the order of the day. Modern Kosmology marks another triumphant evolution.

Engaging and fulfilling, it stands out as one of the most unique and confident records of Weaver’s career so far, with the nagging and thrilling feeling that so much more is waiting to emerge given the scope of her talents.

At all points Modern Kosmology feels like a single inspired continuum of pop songs. The confidence Weaver exhibits in holding them together in balance is well-earned and it is a satisfying spectacle that a rather underappreciated artist should find her moment nearly 25 years into her career.

What makes Jane Weaver and Modern Kosmology such a joy is that it comes as sharp and welcome relief to so many of the serious and po-faced purveyors of cynically cosmic vibes. This is music that simultaneously celebrates and explores, that takes pop as its foundation and then builds a multi-layered space on it that welcomes one and all.

It doesn’t sound anything at all like Jefferson Airplane or Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd, but it does what they did on White Rabbit and See Emily Play respectively, delivering music that sounds like it’s transmitted from the outer limits in sharp, concentrated, accessible doses. All the unearthly power, none of the excess.

The Silver Globe was Weaver's coming-out party; Modern Kosmology serves notice that she's here to stay.

With Modern Kosmology, long-time Manchester folktronic siren Jane Weaver has made her most completely realised album yet, albeit by dispensing with folk music almost entirely, in favour of more forceful Krautrock and psychedelic influences.

Weaver grounds all this analogue fizz and crackle in strong songwriting, erecting a razzle-dazzle wall of sonic scaffolding around richly referential lyrics and lysergic pastoral harmonies. Her best yet. [Jun 2017, p.38]

Modern Kosmology is every bit as good as its predecessor. [Jun 2017, p.90]

A radiant blast of cosmic rock and intergalactic electro-pop that sounds as next-level as the voice of the spaceship, the brain i n the jar, a full-force astral projection. [Jul 2017, p.105]

Showcasing her delicate vocals over a smorgasbord of kosmic soundz, it’s a surprisingly coherent affair.

Taken as a whole though, whilst Jane Weaver may not have delivered quite the revelation hoped for, this is a solid enough self-consolidating affair, that should both keep the faithful happy and ensnare more latecomers.

Very modern and progressive! It reminds me both Stereolab and Silver Apples or even Syd Barrett first songs on Piper.
    Her group is excellent.
