Since Ultraviolence, I knew Lana was capable of creating a modern classic, she would just have to work to it slowly and learn through patience and experience. And here it is three albums later, NFR! Pitchfork called her one of the greatest songwriters of our time. A lot of people have given that backlash, mistaking that comment as "she's the greatest living songwriter." Although not composed by Del Rey - since the idea here is to revisit the classic production of the band Sublime, which already works as a cover for George Gershwin's “Summertime” . And while the group in question was already moving away from Gershwin's jazz, the singer chooses to say goodbye to the constancy of rap to embrace with undeniable force the mix of the trap and a dreamlike pop that reflects her tendencies toward genre-hybridism and suis generis . However, this revitalization is also accompanied by a mandatory, voiceles blankness, ranging from the low echo to a beautiful falsetto [...]"

Lana's songwriting has made leaps and bounds. Not all the songs are great, but there's nothing all that objectionable, either and the ones that are great really are [see: The Greatest], even outside the context of Lana's career. Mostly, she just missed the mark when she is too derivative or tries too hard (or not enough) lyrically, but lacks real substance [See: Bartender]. For the mostLana's songwriting has made leaps and bounds. Mostly, she just missed the mark when she is too derivative or tries too hard (or not enough) lyrically, but lacks real substance [See: Bartender]. For the most part, the average songs blend together because they are too stylistically similar. But there are only a few "duds", which likely would be highlights on her past albums and none of the songs are a slog to get through.

There isn't really anything new here, but with this album, Lana commands people to rethink their assumptions about her, if not take her seriously. This album isn't good for Lana - it's good, period.

    Strengths: Songwriting, Singing, Piano arrangements
    Weaknesses: Variety (stylistic), Uniqueness

Favorites: Mariners Apartment Complex, How to Disappear, California, The Greatest, Happiness is a Butterfly, Hope is a Dangerous Thing

Least Favorites: Bartender, F*ck it I Love You

The unbelievably soft (almost whispered) track 'Cinnamon Girl' is my personal favourite song on the album, it managed to make me cry and really feel what Lana was trying to convey. Overall the album is an emotional, her placing 'Love Song' and 'Cinnamon Girl' one after the other is almost emotional abuse, but there is a slight outlier, to me, in the form of the track 'California' as the delivery of the song just doesn't catch me like the rest of the songs on the album, it is still a good song its just not on the level of 'Cinnamon Girl', 'How To Disappear', 'Happiness is a Butterfly' and 'Love Song'. When the title track started playing I had one thought; 'Lana's back and she's cooler than ever'! Expand

This album is stupendous. There are really no other words to describe Lana’s newest masterpiece. The title track perfectly summarizes the beautiful sounds and aesthetics one would expect from Lana. It’s almost a sin to not listen to the entire album all the way through, at least once. Every track compliments the next. It’s Lana’s best since Ultraviolence. Cinnamon Girl and The Next BestThis album is stupendous. There are really no other words to describe Lana’s newest masterpiece. Every track compliments the next. It’s Lana’s best since Ultraviolence. Cinnamon Girl and The Next Best American Record encompass the same style of sad-core pop famously originating from the Born To Die era, while songs like Norman F*cking Rockwell, Love Song, and Happiness Is A Butterfly make me reminisce the Paradise & Honeymoon eras. Venice B*tch, California, & Doin’ Time rewind the clock back to summer of ‘14, with choruses and melodies similar to those in Ultraviolence, while adding Lana’s new NFR! style of music. This album is brilliant, and worthy of a possible nomination for AOTY. Expand

It's a remarkably sharp pop record that retains her fascination with pop-culture iconography and the rosey simplicity of a post-war America where classic rock and blue jeans ruled and takes them to much deeper places. ... Think of it as an hour-long car ride peeling down the highway with classic rock blaring out of the radio and no real destination in mind other than where your impulsive nature might take you.

A thematically rich record, heavy on mood and elegantly written in a way that positions Del Rey between Eve Babitz and Carole King. There are beguiling and evolving melodies underneath the spare piano and acoustic arrangements. [Nov 2019, p.24]
