There's a lot to ponder while listening to Powers' dynamic and exuberant contours, coming from a band that's adapting to life's changes with piercing directness.

It takes a lot of effort and maturity for a band to identify when things go wrong and make a decision to work it out. It's also a great relief when a band can come back from that kind of struggle with something as strong and potent as Powers.

While there’s nothing here that quite matches the highest highs of their first pass, this is a welcome return for a singular and important band.

An album which proves a bit of time off can make a huge difference, Powers sees The Futureheads fight fiercely once again.

The moving Electric Shock incorporates joyous synths and Headcase is berserk thrash-pop brilliance. Dizzying closer, Mortals, meanwhile, might have been a Top 10 hit in the early '80s. [Oct 2019, p.86]

The band rounds out the album with more familiar-sounding songs like "Stranger in a New Town" and "Good Night Out," but it's Powers' riskier, more revealing moments that prove the Futureheads have more to say than ever before.

Powers is a surprisingly sturdy comeback album that sounds exactly how you remember the Futureheads, and that, at least for nostalgia's sake at least, isn't a bad thing at all.

Powers hits more than it misses, and is a pleasure to have the Mackem lads back.

This simple. One of the best pure and brutally honest rock albums of the last 10 years.
