Protector feels rooted in the psychedelic quicksand that surrounded 2020 debut, and Of No Junction. It's no less enchanting though. [Dec 2022, p.92]

Protector comes across as less lonesome than her debut, though the hushed mystique that is one of her hallmarks remains.

She has found a way to go beyond merely soothing; she nourishes her soul with each word uttered, building herself up into the titular Protector. This is the sound of her new day dawning, and it’s a wonder to behold.

Written and recorded during an extended stay on Ireland’s windswept west coast, the follow-up to Land of No Junction reaps lucidity from family bonding and fleeing the city in search of peace. With it, Frances’ psych-folk soliloquies arrive like postcards from a friend who’s just beginning to open up.

What a show and the various elements of the songs were really apparent when watching her band play up close. This is a lush record with an incredible amount of layers and textures mixed perfectly to create a sound that is incredibly smooth. ANF's vocal style adds a smokey haziness to the span of melodies on display. The opening trio of tracks are for me the strongest quarter hour or so of her recording career to date with "This Still Life" one of the tracks of the year. "Chariot" coming later on in the album is another highlight. "Protector" is an album well worth investing your time and your money in. Full Review »
