OK, it all gets a bit samey in the middle section. But Jake Kelly adds some nice instrumental flourishes, and Dawson once again proves winning and convincing as a simple troubadour who’s not a simpleton.
-
The music is so minimal that you won't return that often. But when you do, you'll remember she loves you.
-
The musical portion of her songs... takes a distant second place to her lyrics. Which is fine, because her words are so engaging, but it wouldn't hurt her to experiment a little more with chord progressions or keys.
-
Alternative PressFor all the offbeat touches... Dawson's wide-eyed hope and wonder are the album's most affecting qualities. [Jun 2006, p.180]
-
BlenderDawson's as self-assured as she is sensitive. [Jun 2006, p.137]
-
The artful and relatable way Dawson writes about real life makes each song like a little individually wrapped gift.
-
With Dawson, the focus is on the lyrics, with her music tending to serve as a mere platform for sprawling, humorous stories whose serious subject matter contradicts the childlike catchiness underpinning them.
-
The songs are especially distinct, and especially direct.
