Amid the jagged funk-offs, a synthesized steel band and the odd keyboard etude colour a strong debut. [May 2015, p.94]

Ripe is one of the most unabashedly joyous and invigorating albums to have appeared in years. It’s a creative tour de force which marks the arrival of a new pop maverick.

While Black is lucky to have friends as skilled and giving as the Brewis brothers, he brings plenty to Slug, and though it's tempting to think that the Brewis brothers' participation is the main draw here, Black proves on Ripe that he's good enough to stand on his own.

The result is pure pleasure as Black takes the trademark Brewis sound and ramps up the funk on groove-driven art-pop gems. [May 2015, p.81]

Ripe is yet another strong offering from the UK’s most collaborative and consistent regional music scenes.

For all its minor stylistic differences, Ripe is very much forged in their image. But if any traditions in British indie rock are worth perpetuating right now, this inventive, engaged stable is the one to back.

Clever as it is, there's all too little that actually engages the heart as well as the mind. [May 2015, p.111]
