All told, Saltwater's the most refreshing indie pop LP since Sufjan Stevens' Illinois.

For all the grey matter on display, this is a Technicolor record. [Jul 2013, p.94]

Rare and enchanting understatement in a brash and gaudy world. [Jun 2013, p.69]

There's a lovely, skittering energy to the second album from Brazos, a restlessness that reflects the band's fitful existence.

With Saltwater but as a difficult second album goes, this is a total breeze rather than a mainsail-battering ocean storm.

Saltwater is an album that is eccentric on its own terms, which is to say off-kilter but charmingly so.

Saltwater is a pretty record and the songs are clearly heavy with personal significance, but it was almost better when they were a little rough around the edges.

If Brazos can focus on their strengths, they have the potential to make a pleasant, summery mark on pop music.

Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and White Denim's D are examples of similar-sounding albums that successfully pushed the respective bands outside their comfort zones, and Saltwater takes Brazos to a new plateau in the same way.

Overall however, listening to Saltwater you realise that, while the album contains nothing seriously off-putting, you grow tired of Brazos’ style when listening to it.
