[Bundick’s] in his element here, embracing the improvisational jazz of The Mattson 2 as together they pry open your third eye and flood your mind with their cosmic apparitions.

The result is a sprawling, warm and idiosyncratic album that doesn't sound as much like collaboration as it probably could have.

Overall, Star Stuff is an enjoyable exercise in semi-constructed jamming and vintage-sounding tones by a trio of skilled musicians, and continues Bundick's evolution toward a more analog texture and approach.

Even in its most indulgent turns, Star Stuff serves its purpose: After making an overly disciplined live album for zero spectators, it’s refreshing to hear Bundick really jam like no one’s looking.

Occasionally the players wax overly noodly--"Steve Pink" doesn't really need to exist, and the album wanders a bit before the vocals finally start on the third track--but overall this is an enjoyable collaboration for any lover of spaced-out, swirly psych-pop.

The eight-minute sprawl of ‘Don’t Blame Yourself’, too, is wildly self-indulgent and could have had at least a couple of minutes lopped off. Ultimately, though, he sounds rejuvenated on Star Stuff, and that bodes well for whatever he has lined up next.

The sunny hooks of the title track and Disco Kid's funky backsbeat display similar flair, though indulgent wig-outs such as Don't Blame Yourself could do with an edit. [Jun 2017, p.105]
