Honestly a let down. After her masterpiece Dangerous Woman this is a step back. Almost every song is uninteresting. The singles are the best songs: No Tears Left To Cry, God Is A Woman and Breathin.

The album is actual crap. That is just a euphemism. The bubble gum beats make me want to puke, her singing is overrated, clearly average and her lyrics are as simple as a baby's vocabulary. There are one or two average to good songs, but one or two songs do not make an album, and the bar for pop artists has clearly dropped off a cliff if critics are going to suck Ariana's dick like displayed by their overly kind reviews. A very solid work of art that was compounded by the commercial and musical success of every single on the album. Featured notable contributions from established artists and the artist tracks delivered well. The album, however, lacked consistency and, despite being a shift in Ariana's nature, was somewhat messy. A great album overall.

Sweetener has solidified itself to be one of the many important albums that will go down in music history. With Ariana's sweet voice and creative mind, she can either make herself sound like a dream (R.E.M) or a full choir (God is a woman). The production of the said tracks weren't on par with the rest of the songs produced by Max Martin and the like, receiving mixed reactions because of how small the impact is but personally, he did fair. However above all things, we can respect Ariana Grande's decision to experiment and for me, it is a good experiment. Expand

Ariana's voice sounds a lot fuller in this album compared to her others. The first few tracks are some decent bangers, and I started to realise why the album was rated so highly by critics. But the album takes a nosedive very quickly. Too many tracks and she doesn't sing with enough emotion. Catchy in parts though.

Ariana Grande is moving from her musical comfort zone, and she's doing good anyways.
I can't say "Sweetener" is a perfect album, but it's a great new start for Ariana, who must follow this flow of change.

The production is well done, the vibe is good and we can all notice the work behind this album. I really enjoyed Pharrel's productions, even though many people didn't. But the only big problem with "Sweetener" is the lyrics, that work for most of the songs, but not in every of them.

    My top 3 is:
    1. "R.E.M"
    2. "The light is coming" ft. Nicki Minaj
    3. "successful"
    bonus: "God is a woman"

This may not be the best album of the year, but Ariana is working to achieve this goal.

There was something lacking in her past records; and her writing most of these tracks and going through adversity, advanced her artistic sensibilities and made her work more innovative and cohesive. The songs produced by Pharrell are some of the best because they make you work to understand their true intent or meaning. Just like the age of streaming-pop right now, everything is given to the listener on a silver platter and they do not have to work to uncover the true meaning of the song. With Pharrell's tracks, it takes time to digest the true meaning and that is what great pop music does. Her artistic advances, voice, and writing is absolutely brilliant on this album because it all comes from a place of honest vulnerability following the terrorist attacks. Her most brilliant tracks on this album are first breathin, which is literally a song about clinical anxiety, but is disguised as a brilliant pop song thanks to the production. The way she says "My, My Air" at the end is pretty remarkable, and although that is only a small detail, it really adds to the experience someone goes through when they have a legitimate anxiety attack. God is a Woman is another brilliant track because she manages to merge art and female empowerment with a catchy melody and forward thinking production. Definitely her most innovative work, and she seems to be the only female pop star leading the charts right now in an increasingly hip hop dominated streaming world. If she continues to be this honest in her music, and write her own music, she will be one of the greatest pop stars the world has ever seen. Oh and not to mention her angelic soprano voice, which imbues the record with effortless vocals and a showcase for true vocal technicality that only a singer of immense musicality can accomplish. Although the album is quite consistent in terms of sounds presenting a mostly R & B line produced by Pharrel Williams that becomes so repetitive that it becomes boring, something that we can not blame Pharrel but the young singer because I get wrapped up quite well in the new genre. Understanding that it is a great change for the dangerous woman and she is still adapting to this new environment, we hope that in future work she will be able to mold herself well. Despite the bad taste of mouth that we take with the excess of filling in "Sweetener" it is necessary to speak of the masterpiece "breathin", one of the most precious jewels of the album in which it is impossible to highlight the majestic composition with the that Ariana transmitted a feeling with which she is easy to connect and the wonderful vocal performance that fits very well with the production (in which, curiously, Pharrel is not involved).

With four studio albums under her belt and five years in the industry, anyone would expect a drastic evolution in terms of artistry but it’s not the case. Then again, Ariana relies on longtime collaborators Max Martin and Savan Kotecha to take care of the production and composition of quite a few songs from the record, and they’re decent at best. The addition of Pharrell Williams is what makes Sweetener stand out from her other albums, but not in a good way. Ariana is known for her gifted voice, which she doesn’t show off in any song. This makes listeners pay more attention to the production and the lyrics and both are really mediocre. So, this makes us wonder… If Ariana doesn’t show off her voice or her songwriting skills, or any other kind of artistic involvement, then what is she good for? Why is she in the Forefront of this new generation of Pop music? Is a pleasant voice enough to keep her on top of the game? Overall, Sweetener is this year’s pop most painful disappointment and the death of one of our very last hopes for Pop Music to have another Golden era.
    Standout tracks: R.E.M., Everytime

I'm rather shocked that critics have determined this to be Ariana's best album thus far; in my opinion, it is far below the pop perfection of Dangerous Woman. Indeed, even My Everything was arguably better, as there isn't a single song on Sweetener that screams FUTURE SMASH HIT in the same way "Problem," "One Last Time," "Bang Bang" and "Break Free" did.

Sweetener contains three good songs: "No Tears Left To Cry," "God Is a Woman," and "Breathin." Unfortunately, 2/3 of those have already been released; as such, I don't see this record having any longevity. The remainder of the album is pretty homogeneous, and some of the midtempos nearly have a soporific effect on the listener. It's really a shame, not just because of the immense talent being wasted here, but also because Dangerous Woman was one of the most promising pop records we've heard in a long while. Overall, this record just feels exceptionally uninspired.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ariana's worst album yet and millions of light years behind Dangerous Woman. Pharrell's production was messy, all over the place and too distinctly him it clouded Ari's personality. I'm an Ari fan but this album is just painful to listen to. And it confuses me how major music review publications are pretending to like it like just knock it off. Say what you want about Max Martin but without the guy and God Is a Woman this album is just a lost cause.

Love: God Is A Woman, everytime, breathin
Hate: blazed, the light is coming (truly godawful song), R.E.M, sweetener (ridiculous chorus and Pharrell's vocal backtrack truly makes me cringe), successful (juvenile lyrics), borderline (and honestly what was Missy Elliott's deadpan guest verse about? Had NO personality whatsoever)
Neutral: raindrops, no tears left to cry, pete davidson, get well soon

I'm sorry I really tried to like this album but Pharrell needs to keep his hands off mainstream pop. Also to Ari stans, this album, although a brave statement and possibly what Ari has always been wanting to try out musically, is in no way one step further into mainstream for her?! She's getting distracted from fully utilizing her powerful vocals to product pop megahits, and instead is just making lyrically-immature, production-wise messy, generic, forgettable messes. Big NOPE for me.

Something about Sweetener just really clicked. I have no idea how to even describe it. Through listening to it more and more and letting these songs grow on me I really noticed how much Ariana's style has evolved and how they're even doing some experimenting by having Pharrell Williams produce a bunch of the tracks to really switch up the sound here. It still has some obviously mainstream oriented ballads, but I feel like the album strikes a perfect balance between her classic, but now evolved, sound and this new kind of banging sound that not only was I not expecting but also didn't realize how well it actually fits.

Whether the song is a relaxing vibey ballad or an absolutely banging anthem, all of the songs feel much more personal than in her previous projects. For example in the excellent addicting "The Light Is Coming" she talks about positivity and forcing yourself to look at the bright side of things by saying that the light is literally coming to get back what the darkness stole. This of course can either refer to just normal life but also the Manchester attack that took place during one of her concerts. She also talks about anxiety, going back to a previous relationship and also most likely about the Mac Miller breakup in the song "Better Off", but she also, like mentioned before, does a couple ballads where she talks about wanting to be with someone and falling in love hard or just getting head and f*cking. She also of course references her fiancé Pete Davidson in many tracks and even has a track completely for him which is very fittingly titled "Pete Davidson". She states how she's so happy with him with this night-vibey bassy production in the background that ends in heavenly violin sounds.

She has definitely talked about these things before too, but here it just sounds and feels so much more polished. The lyrics aren't exactly mind-blowingly written or super deep in any way, but they can be fun, clever, emotional and very sweet. And with Ariana's angelic voice that sounds better than ever it's impossible to not be charmed by all of this. The production ranges from the vibey pop/rock sound to banging beats that I was pretty much immediately addicted to. They do all these little things with the music like layer Ariana's voice many times to have a choir effect or cut the beat off at some point for a second or two and put it back in to really make the flow of the song sink in to you. It's great that they paid attention to all these little details that make the music fun and fresh.

This kind of sound is something that Ariana excels at, and I want her to keep at it and evolve it. I was highly anticipating this one but I was still very much surprised. Not just in a pleasant "Oh" way but actually in like a "Oh sh*t this is like actually really good. Great success!" way. It's brilliant.

Breathin' is pop perfection and literally the best pop song I have ever listened to in my whole life (as well as Into You by her prior album).

The intro is probably the best introduction for an album I have ever listened to since Lana Del Rey's Cruel World.

Even tho The Light Is Coming is the not-so-good song on the album, it is still amazing - Nicki's part is perfect.

Get Well Soon is perfect, and those 40 seconds of silence in honor of the Manchester attack victims are a great way to end the album.

Easily her best album and best album of the year. Once again, she proved she isn't just a pop girl, she's the main singer right now and one of the biggest voices ever in history.

Grande’s new sound, the Williams-produced Not-Bangers, only make up half of the album. These standout tracks are interspersed between standard pop tracks. ... That’s not to say that the Bangers on Sweetener are bad--it’s more that they belong in previous era of Grande and they spoil the flow between songs. Sweetener may not be the dawning of a new age for Ariana but it could be a step towards somewhere weird and wonderful.

Ms. Grande backs up her statements with song-and-dance mastery. ... She’s her own choir, support group and posse. While a few guest vocalists (Mr. Williams, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott) provide a little grit for contrast, Ms. Grande sails above any fray, past or present. Her aplomb is her triumph.
