Tenderness is exciting because of how simple and distilled it is, and how memorable its songs are even after just one or two listens.

Interestingly the relationship described in Tenderness is between Standell and a new lover, which you would expect to be a difficult topic for Blue Hawaii to collaborate on, but they are alarmingly mature in the way they support each other on this musical project.

Tenderness sounds bigger, bolder, and more sensual than Blue Hawaii's previous work, thanks to the duo's embrace of house, disco, and '90s dance music.

Lyrically, Tenderness can be pretty shallow. If these are songs about disconnection and misunderstanding, the lyrics don’t do a great job of fleshing out the concept. ... Still the warm, well-wrought pop of Tenderness is by far the group’s most enjoyable collection of songs.

In some of its explorations of dance music’s sub-genres it is less successful, and can come off as a bit too cheesy for its own good, but it’s all produced, performed and sequenced with such careful consideration and bountiful charm, that its few shortcomings in pure songwriting terms can be overlooked.

With greater room for booming electro-ballads and crisply produced dance numbers, Tenderness is more engaging than its predecessor but no less immersive, making it on the whole a hugely accomplished return.

The upbeat Euro-tone with a dark edge that characterizes Tenderness is tidily executed, evocative and catchy to boot.
