Terra is in no hurry to hook you, but once its charms become evident, it's hard not to be bewitched. It cleans up all of the more histrionic and clunky aspects of Lynch's previous work, and conjures a neat little self-contained world.

Terra doesn't just contribute to the quieter end of the spectrum, it reminds me of the boundaries of that spectrum, and all the sounds murmuring inside them.

Even amongst his New Jersey-based peers and labelmates, Lynch's work remains disconnected from pop and from folk music while never being truly disengaged with it, and Terra serves as major evidence of his growing confidence as a composer and player.

At times invoking Sung Tongs-era Animal Collective, although never to the point of copyright infringement, Julian Lynch's Terra is certainly an interesting listen, even if it does come across as disjointed.

Terra clearly isn't meant for a sun-soaked day at the beach. It's meant for quiet evenings at home, for slow living, for monotonous days of insularity, idealized but never unrealistic.

This is music that needs to be ruminated on during late nights. [May 2011, p.79]

The hodgepodge of instrumentals and lopsided melodies felt like they were working together toward a weird, wobbly, warm center on "Mare," but on Terra they ultimately prove more confusing than captivating.
