The queen has done it again ! We see a perfect example of how to meld a genre together while incorporating a signature flare to it only accustomed to Beyoncé herself. We see a perfect example of how to meld a genre together while incorporating a signature flare to it only accustomed to Beyoncé herself. As she says, this is a love letter to Africa, diving into spirituality as well as pride for the motherland. It reimagines the story of the Lion King's plot, but flips it on its head accompanied by beautiful melodies and harmonies. The featured artists like Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Tekno and many more fit perfectly for an Afro-adventure ! Adding in the respective interludes made for a true bout of storytelling that is missed if the interludes weren't integrated in the sequence of the album. Telling the story of hopelessness, loss of passion, betrayal to courage, strength, endurance, and power The Lion King: The Gift is story within a story. Those who can see it: Beyoncé is someone who is obviously in touch with her culture and spirituality, telling the story of Mother Nature and her struggle and desire to become whole again, for humanity to stand up and fight in her lead single, "Spirit". She features her beautiful daughter Blue Ivy to represent Mother Earth bearing fruit, the next generation as she switches from scene to scene, displaying a sense of worry, sadness, tears, to rejoicing and the celebration of the rallying of her soldiers to defend her life and their home respectively. She also symbolizes African deities, specifically Youruba deities such as Yemaya, telling the story and offering a warning to those who will listen, about the liberation of the earth not coming to fruition due to the greed and unhealthy desires of mankind. She has seen war and felt the destruction of her person and finally she can allow the patrons of the land to save them from their counterparts. This album is a journey for anyone who's seen such struggles, but specifically for black and African American people both, whom their entire history has had obstacles stacked against them-- outside influences that affect their entire life journey, rising above said challenges. In a climate where a genre like this won't be well received by the same redundantpop messages and bubblegum storytelling, Beyoncé took risks and gave the genre a whole new life, straying away from the norms of a Pop/R&B artist. This album will likely go overlooked, but The Lion King: The Gift will go down as a hidden gem, a masterpiece among her discography. Well done Queen Bey ! Expand

A very successful introduction of afro-beat to the general public in the US and elsewhere. Beyoncé never disapoints, and this is no exception. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is probably my favorite soundtrack i have ever heard. It is nothing short of brilliant and excellent. The songs are in sync with the Lion King Movie as they celebrate the black identity and self discovery that is central to the film. Afrobeats was seamlessly fused with R&B and Hip Hop to create a great sound that unites black people all around, it was an insurmountable feat and Beyonce is the only artist who could have taken the initiative to bring all these people and sounds together. It has some lovely ballads like Spirit and Otherside in which Beyonce delivers riveting and powerful vocals. It has a badass female empowerment anthem in My Power which i will always listen to in the gym. It has the epic and grand collaboration Mood 4 Eva with a great Oumou Sangare sample and a great outro by Childish Gambino. Find Your Way Back is a great song with a bridge by Bankulli which you will sing along to without really knowing a word lol. Not to forget the afrobeats banger, Dont jEALOUS mE which will have you on your feet dancing and Water with Pharell and Salatiel which will make you move your body, the way God intended it. Its just a great concise project with so many epic and heartfelt moments. Expand

Beyoncé's surprise release of her 'The Lion King' inspired project is one of the most authentic pieces of art. I might not have enjoyed every song on this record, but I certainly loved the African themed production and I appreciate that every artist on the album is of African descent. It's a beautiful homage to Africa which is what 'The Lion King' is supposed to be, so Bey did what needed to be done. The main issue is the featured artists not holding their own all of the time and also some of the tracks attempt to do too much at once and it becomes confused and crowded, but a lot of the tracks do truly show the beauty of African culture and I believe that is the true win for the project.

The dance anthem with Nija, Whack, Busiswa & Moonchild is a potential hit. Beyonce made an African collection album but I feel she tried less and she is very capable of doing bigger. The videos will probably add vision to the sounds and add the flavors needed. Expand

The album itself is far from being the best but also not the worst. Though I have to complement Beyoncé and/or her management team, no one can beat those brand marketing strategies.

What a pile of pretentious rubbish. It doesn’t feel inspired or Lion King related, it’s just a cash-grab. The production is good, but that’s to be expected, as is her voice, but again, no surprise there. I just feel that this is a step too far, it feels incredibly entitled and just uses the The Lion King as a perfect sales opportunity.

The film itself should have been left alone, but to spoil the original widely-adored soundtrack too? Unforgivable.

They are higlights such as "powa" which is a club ready thrill that allows smaller artists(some from my country) to shine or the ever growing notch in Beyonce belt of empowerment anthems " brown skin girl" tags her daughter(who would win a grammy for it )in celebrating the beauty that is black women. But the rest is genuinely frustrating such as the lifeless "mood4eva" or the irritating "biggger". Expand

Expand

This woman is so overrated, she did a few catchy songs, but for the rest... she is just surfing on the wave of PCness. Ok. I overdid it, but still, listen to that record, do you remember the Elton John songs? Still yeah.?

HORRENDOUS! No wonder this album sold a humiliating 900 copies in the UK. It is sonic torture. Beyonce has consistently been going down hill for years! She hasn't had a real hit since Single Ladies and her last three albums have been awful. She's too Americanised and making rubbish R&B/rap music that doesn't connect with anyone outside of American. AWFUL!

the sound is not very different from beyonce's albums, it's purely beyonce. The only attraction of the album are the other artists who put a new sound, but beyonce is over.

Horrible! Some films and songs are never meant to be reproduced as this is an example of that.

Overall, it works and is another jewel in her crown — one that she, overall, can be proud to call hers.

Ultimately, The Gift is a deft balancing act that weighs personal songwriting flourishes and meaning with Disneycore tropes, as well as a sincere desire to celebrate the music of the African diaspora with its fundamentally commercial obligations.

On The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé deftly connects a kid's flick to something bigger, honoring not only Africa and its traditions but also shifting perspective to future destiny and greatness. It's a superior statement and a lesson on how to properly execute a winning soundtrack.
