    While The Makarrata Project is, overall, more of an exercise in maintaining rather than innovating, it is nevertheless a work replete with the customary philosophical and musical intelligence the Oils have displayed throughout their history.

    If one criticism of Diesel and Dust was that it was a bunch of white blokes telling Aboriginal people’s stories for them, The Makarrata Project looks to tell these stories with them, giving at least equal time to Indigenous voices, language and music. ... Yes, there are a lot of “other” voices on this Midnight Oil set. It’s sure not 1987. Good.

    While the collaborative nature and scant length of The Makarrata Project might have some fans wishing for more of a straightforward rock album after so many years away, the band nonetheless stay true to their long-held mission with a focused, purposeful, and culturally relevant return to form.

    The likes of "Gadigal Land" and "First Nation" evoke an earlier Oils, circa the seething post-punk of "Head Injuries" - though the show is stolen by Alice Skye, who takes lead on the poised protest ballad "Terror Australia." [Jan 2021, p.28]
