A broader exploration of form. ... Like most everything here, ["Geraldine" is] a beautifully weighted moment. [Jun 2017, p.26]

As always, Mulcahy’s pastoral pop stirs up a delightful brew, both easily accessible and undeniably irrepressible all at the same time.

The Possum in the Driveway is as brilliant as it is profound, cut through with sadness and longing, life and love, and some of the best songwriting to have been released this year.

The remarkably focused and eclectic The Possum In The Driveway.

The thing about Mulcahy is that he can try on all of these voices and it never once feels contrived, the sensitivity of his readings means you believe in him. That, along with the quality and variety of songwriting makes Possum a rare gift.

Mulcahy’s least predictable album: there’s something memorable and unexpected lurking around every corner.

While The Possum in the Driveway may not be the type of album every Mulcahy fan has been anticipating, they can be assured that it’s yet another worthwhile stop on a journey that seems to have many miles left to go.

At first, it’s a bit off-putting how much Mulcahy has extended his reach, also considering its numerous shapeshifting vocal qualities, but once you recalibrate your expectations you’re left with an album that bravely looks ahead. It’s a fond return riddled with unbounded creativity, and could very well be his definitive statement.

Mulcahy follows the songs through rock, jazz and indie pop, from opening lullaby Stuck On Something Else to the Robert Wyatt-esque Geraldine, a rare and wise treat from an underrated songwriter. [Jun 2017, p.89]

Most of the time, it sounds like each song has been half-written, then forgotten for a bit, then returned to with too little time to create something truly interesting, forcing Mulcahy to fill in the gaps with basically whatever will rhyme with the sketches of lyrics he had originally.

Much of The Possum... feels like an echo of earlier, better work.
