The Shakes is a record with raw energy.

The Shakes is nonetheless brimming with alien sounds and left-field rhythms (culled from objects purchased on eBay), proving that even the most subdued Herbert release is still pretty damn fascinating.

Some of Herbert's most engaging work since 2001's Bodily Functions. [Jul 2015, p.91]

There is a sense, though, that the nuances and detail of The Shakes need careful unpicking. It might be a return to dance music, but it’s far from disposable.

The Shakes is worth hearing for the sonic detail alone. The best tracks have an inclusive, sweeping abandon that rivals the high points of Scale.

Herbert is right to want more from music and to deliver his messages accessibly, but the lyrics are sometimes (perhaps disingenuously) generic and devoid of sharp edges.

A mixed bag, then, but still uniquely one of Herbert's own. [Jul 2015, p.107]
