  1. As studio swan songs go, this sounds pretty darn good.

    Giddily adventurous. [8-22 Jul 2004, p.128]
  3. A workmanlike effort that won’t do anything to harm the Phish legacy, but isn’t notable enough to make me wish that the band wasn’t packing it in.

For most of the album, Phish sound tighter and more alive than they normally do off stage.... [but] the band can't avoid the cloying tendencies that have always hampered their studio work. [18 Jun 2004, p.84]
  5. It's the fragmented experiments that keep Undermind from being a straightforward batch of songs, and they ultimately provide a much-needed balance.

The ballads are clunky and ponderous. The groove stuff, though... exists in that blissy stratosphere the Dead visited so often. [Aug 2004, p.138]
  7. Hardly anything here makes an impression after repeated listens. What's worse, even fewer tracks possess the spark or invention for which Phish is revered.

Definitely not the best Phish album out there, but I'd rank it fifth behind PoN, BB, Junta, Farmhouse. It's a whole hell of a lot Definitely not the best Phish album out there, but I'd rank it fifth behind PoN, BB, Junta, Farmhouse. It's a whole hell of a lot better than Round Room and some of the cuts (Scents and Subtle Sounds, Army of One, Undermind) are very good. Expand

One of Phish's better studio albums, but does that mean much? No, they are a live band outfit, arguably the best. So, it shouldn't One of Phish's better studio albums, but does that mean much? No, they are a live band outfit, arguably the best. So, it shouldn't surprise anybody that it's a weak album. Yet, "the connection" is great. They tried a new type of groove, going much more mainstream pop. And, unfortunately, it fell short. Expand

I've gotta agree with Aaron. "The biggest corporate rock group in the history of music" breathes new life to the word asinine. I've gotta agree with Aaron. "The biggest corporate rock group in the history of music" breathes new life to the word asinine. That's almost as nonsensical as Rolling Stone saying "The Connection" was "the most commanding song of their sixteen-year recording career." To speak without thinking beforehand is like wiping your rear before you crap. Expand

While not the worst album in the phish catalogue is a huge disappointment. The songs are horribly simplistic and the lyrics are meaningless. While not the worst album in the phish catalogue is a huge disappointment. The songs are horribly simplistic and the lyrics are meaningless. There isn't even the sound of joy in the music, like the band members are sluging through what will be their last work together. If you are a phish fan, i'd recommend you advoid this albumn at all costs, it could make you hate phish. If you already disliked phish, here is more fodder for an already loaded arsenal for what may be the biggest corporate rock group in the history of music. Expand

A bad album, anyway you cut it. Once again Phish proves they are more skilled at swindling the money of drug addicts then they are at playing A bad album, anyway you cut it. Once again Phish proves they are more skilled at swindling the money of drug addicts then they are at playing their instruments.
