Though these songs cry out for DVD treatment, this audio-only collection is still an unparalleled document.

This set of 33 songs, 11 of which never aired, revisits both [MTV Unplugged] sessions, boiling their magical greatness down to two base elements: achingly sugared melodies and Michael Stipe's potent voice, in all its deep grain, swooning vibrato and radiant empathy.

All in all, a stellar mix of tracks, performed exquisitely and, in light of their split in 2011, now with added poignancy.

In less words, a 31-track collection that only sometimes shows the greatness of what was once a great band.

Unplugged is another in a very long line of R.E.M. live releases you wouldn’t exactly call essential, if only because they set the bar so high with their concert films Tour Film and Road Movie. But things don’t have to be essential to be worth owning.

This is a snapshot of a band riding the wave then watching as the tide rolls away again. Somewhere in between they were the biggest band in the world.

Hardly essential, then, but Unplugged is a fans-pleasing release that serves as a reminder that songs with great longevity needn’t always be played loudly.
