We’re hearing Junior Boys’ elegant growth and evolution with their sound. We’re constantly impressed with how Greenspan and his partner Matt Didemus create some moving sounds, pivoting away from their synth-funk past.

Junior Boys’ track record shows that change is good, but here it feels like the tiptoe before a more significant step.

An immersive, gently hypnotic and sporadically sublime album. [Dec 2022, p.29]

    Understated and enveloping.

Waiting Game is a smooth and smart shift for an outfit that was doing just fine prior but could stand to switch it up. Whether soft reset or brief respite, it's definitely Junior Boys' most tasteful and interesting album.

The result is an album defined largely by what it lacks compared to the band’s past work: a reduction rather than an expansion. Waiting Game proves the duo can conjure their trademark atmosphere without many of their usual tools, but it’s harder to identify what their music gains from losing them.
