Weather pushes the boundaries of Tycho's traditional sound, and in so doing, proves there is something serious to be said about stepping outside the comfort zone.

Tycho never loses sight of what he is known for: the skillful mastery of crafting brilliant ambient soundscapes from bare computer programs. And believe it or not, his sound here is that much more captivating.

Weather sees Hansen and co teasing out some new strands to their winning formula of blissful electronics. At just eight low-stress tracks, this isn't so much a headlong dash for horizons new as it is a gentle evolution, but you could do far worse than kick back and enjoy the weather.

He shows he can incorporate all of his signature elements into a traditional pop song structure without having to compromise the core, distinctive elements that make him such an innovative and intriguing artist.

For the most part, Cottrell reliably prevents the listener from getting engulfed in the aural haze that has become Hansen’s trademark. That said, with her distinct vocal character, it seems like she could invest her singing with more spiked edges if she chose to—or if the music called for it.

It ultimately comes up short on tapping into the kind of emotional depth needed to resonate beyond feeling like those brief moments when we find ourselves experiencing a sudden case of deja vu before snapping back to reality.

Cottrell’s voice is airy and breathy, seemingly forged specifically for Tycho’s music, but it’s in fact when it takes centre stage, the record stutters. Tycho’s beauty was in the remarkable way they had created a unique sound, something that gets lost within many of these tracks that play out as good but fairly standard down-tempo dream-pop.

It is when the album starts to sound like a Saint Sinner record produced by Tycho that the problems arise, but it remains worth a listen for those who appreciate immaculate soundscapes.

Weather functions as one would expect of Tycho's vision of a pop album -- it's immaculately crafted as well as relatable, while also smooth and unchallenging enough to warrant repeated background listening.

During its most striking moments, Weather is yet another example of Scott Hansen’s musical craftsmanship and excitingly it clearly illustrates the validity of his collaborative efforts with other musical artists. However the weighting on Weather is at times off-kilter and inconsistent, if Hansen can rectify and master this in future projects, he will likely be making the best music of his career.

Why is it a writer of such great instrumental music would think adding vocals would in some way improve said music? The vocals on this recordWhy is it a writer of such great instrumental music would think adding vocals would in some way improve said music? The vocals on this record are truly awful, and make the whole record sound like some generic millenial pop rubbish. Whatever good music there might be on this record it's obscured by some horrible caterwauling that is quite painful to listen to. Such as massive disappointment and the first Tycho album i will not be buying, Just glad i got to hear it before i wasted my money. Full Review »

Lyrics are meh, but the singing is great. Tycho's sound is still here and he'd doing more elaborate drums. He does some clean break beat stuff. He's getting stronger. Probably should have been sold as a side project tho. People seem pissed off about this one. hahahah Full Review »

It would be one thing if he featured Bjork or even someone like Dido, but the female here hits no alto, soprano or the like... She sounds like a teenage girl singing high pitched, unconfident and off key in the shower. What a shame, but at least his previous records are great. Full Review »
