With an average Metascore of 53, it’s safe to say that mega pop star, Katy Perry, has never enjoyed the best of reviews. But what do reviews matter when you’ve already made millions off songs like “Firework,” “Dark Horse,” and “I Kissed A Girl?” I have no idea; but seeing the especially awful reviews for her latest release, Witness, I was intrigued. I figured the critics and fans were reacting more to her new Trash-Bag-Miley-Cyrus look than her new music, but boy was I wrong. Dead wrong.

The album gets off to a decent enough start with “Witness,” a song whose dance music isn’t anything special, but its chorus is catchy enough for me to be singing it loud enough in my head that I forget my order at Burger King. “Hey Hey Hey” is more memorable with its growling synths, creating a unique contrast to Perry’s sweet voice. The track finds the singer doing a bit of bragging- her money situation is ridiculous, she’s strong and independent. Basically, she’s a bad **** She continues the braggadocios delivery “Swish Swish," a confirmed Taylor Swift diss track. Overall, Perry takes some nice shots (Yeezy would be proud) and Nicki Minaj closes out the track in typical Nicki Minaj fashion- flexing on haters while switching deliveries/voices several times over. Is the track dumb? Yes. Is it a lot of fun? Absolutely.

    Then the album completely dies.

In classic pop album fashion, this record is front loaded like a mother. After the first four songs, all the effort the album puts in to convey Perry’s strength as an independent woman is deconstructed by a series of sappy love songs that harp on unrequited romance and “what if” scenarios. The sparkling turd in this pile is “Miss You More.” It dials up the cringe to 11 as Perry exclaims in the chorus, “I missed you more than I loved you.” Everyone’s experienced puppy love before, but no one wants to talk about it, let alone hear a 3 minute song about it.

In addition to the smh-love-songs, there’s some “party anthems” (“Chained To The Rhythm”) that are about as energetic as Chris Cornell’s corpse and sex songs that fail to titillate (“Bon Appétit”). Not to forget, all of this “fresh” material is delivered to you, the listener, courtesy of some lukewarm club music.

If you really want to get some joy out of this album, listen to it for the hilariously awful metaphors/analogies that litter the album’s lyrics. Let’s check some out-

You’ve got me spread like a buffet (“Bon Appétit”)
I take a deep breath and save as draft (“Save as Draft”)
You came in like a sailor with your heart that anchored me (“Into Me You See”)
Life’s a pendulum/It all comes back around (“Pendulum”)
    The entirety of “Tsunami”

There's loads more, but I'd like to close this out with one of my own-

Reviewing Katy Perry is like trying to make love to a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner, it sucks.

Most of the songs in this album are total trash with no sense of rhythm, definitely not music you can dance to. The only one worth listening to is the collab with Nicki, and that's because the beat is awesome and she slays her part. Very disappointed by her new music, hope she gets back to making good pop hits

I suspect that most of them are teenage Katy Perry stalker fans because this album is embarrassingly bad, especially after the way it was hyped up. I'm still confused as to why any artist would make a grandiose announcement claiming that they will be releasing purposeful music, and then come out with a song like "Bon Appetit". Seriously? I can't even listen to the whole song because my head hurts from face-palming so much. Personally, I barely made it through this album. I found the songs to be, for the most part, boring, and the lyrics nothing short of cringe-worthy. I honestly feel like a middle school student could write better lyrics, and that's just sad knowing that there was an entire team of people working on this album. I think there was 1 song that didn't make me want to jump out of a window: Into Me You See. Pop’s Review of Katy Perry’s WITNESS

WITNESS: I already heard this song as a demo a year ago and it still sounds like an early 00s Madonna B-side. And for Katy, that’s a big success because usually she floats in Rebecca Black territory. The whistles in the end sound pathetic. 5/10

Hey Hey Hey: Everything about this song (including the title) sends me cringing into oblivion. Katy is well known for her horrible nursery rhyme lyrics, but the chorus to this abomination takes it to another level of lyrical immaturity. She needs to have her KCA taken away for that “chubby little wallet” bridge because that’s offensive even to her 8 year old fans, if there are any of them left nowadays. 0/10

Roulette: This one sounds like something that wouldn’t make the cut to Britney’s Femme Fatale album. Katy sounds sedated and bored… and so am I. 2/10

Swish Swish: Kopy Pasty strikes again as she blatantly steals the Truffle Butter beat and sticks some embarrassingly ironic lyrics about how she’s bigger and better than Taylor on top of that stolen beat. A failed attempt at reigniting the years old feud that Taylor Swift already won. Nicki’s verse is tolerable. 4/10

Déjà vu: “You suck my soul up in a vacuum”. Enough said. The beat is nice, I guess, but Katy’s lyrics are worse than Chinese water torture. 4/10

Power: The songs are really starting to blend in at this point. The beats are all the same and all the songs are mastered to be too bassy and it’s extremely grating to the ears, especially in combination with Katy’s nails on a chalkboard vocals. I’ve heard more interesting elevator music than this song. 0/10

Mind Maze: “I’m losing all direction” is the opening line to this song and I think it’s the perfect way to describe everything about this album. This is what happens when you buy your own shtick. Katy Perry trying to be deep is like McDonalds trying to sell gourmet food. It’s just NOT going to happen. This one is less annoying than the one before. 2/10

Miss You More: Time for a generic ballad, I guess. There’s absolutely nothing memorable about this, but it doesn’t make me want to pour liquid metal into my earsockets like some of the previous tracks so I guess that’s good. 3/10

Chained To The Rhythm: What people thought was a quick little buzz single turned out to be the albums best song. Sad. 6/10

Tsunami: Katy has a problem with big sounding song titles (Tsunami, Roar, Power) that end up being less exciting than a rerun of a badminton match. This song came and went and I felt nothing. Absolutely devoid of any substance, 100% filler. 1/10

Bon Appetit: Much has already been said about how awkward and gross sounding this song is. My guess is that Katy thought this would be the Dark Horse of the era. Good thing the public taste has evolved since 2013 and refused a serving of this rotten meal. The last chorus has a little bit of oomph and for that I give it 2/10

Bigger Than Me: Jesus Christ, how long is this album? I feel like I’ve already heard this song 5 times since I pressed play. At this point I’m 98% sure that Hey Hey Hey, Roulette, Déjà vu, Power, Tsunami and this are the same song sung in a different key. ENOUGH ALREADY 1/10

Save As Draft: Time for another generic ballad. This one is worse than the first one. 2/10

Pendulum: This is Katy Perry trying to serve some soul into a song, which is a commendable attempt but it’s sadly just an attempt. By the time the chorus hits, we go back to nursery rhyme teas and the awful production takes the song back into generic filler material. 4/10

Into Me You See: The album finally ends with ballad #3. This one is kind of soft and tolerable. It reminds me of something you would hear in Frozen or another children’s movie soundtrack. An uneventful ending to an uneventful album. 5/10

Conclusion: Katy Perry proves what we’ve always known was true. She has no talent, she has no vision and she has no value as an artist. Now that Capitol’s payola machine can’t even save her and she’s approaching middle-aged woman territory, she’s going to be put in the same discontinued aisle as Paula Abdul.

    WITNESS Overall score: 1/10

It's good that she's been flopping lately because at least now the public can also see what the critics have always seen: HER MUSIC IS TERRIBLE. There is a reason why she took so long to finally release her first album, nobody trusted her, because she had terrible ideas and ruined everything she touched. Just remember, my opinion is only worth what it's worth to you and that it really doesn't matter what I think. The album starts off strong for 10 seconds... and quickly dies in an explosion of overbloated production and annoying vocal effects. The whistling was annoying, the synth reminded me of the 80s (I hate being reminded of the 80s), and the lyrics overall were particularly uninspiring, let alone the fact that they were seemingly random at many points, especially during Swish Swish (Shellfish? Sheep? WTF?) Just because lyrics rhyme doesn't mean that the lyrics themselves are good... swish swish bish... I can't believe it took 7 people to come up with that "catchy chorus." Nicki's appearance in this album was incredibly annoying and somewhat laughable (The way she says the word despise is especially chuckleworthy.) Anyway, the reason as to why I didn't give it a 0, was simply because of the intrigue I still have over the first ten seconds of this album. I can't believe I listened to the whole thing.

    Final Score: 1/10

If you were offended by my review, I'm sorry I didn't enjoy the album as much as you did, and I'm happy that you managed to listen through the whole entire album in joy when I couldn't even stand the chorus of what was supposed to be the best song on the whole entire album... so congrats on not being as negative as me, and have a nice day. :)

Lazy lyrics, questionable themes, can't even compare to her other albums. In this album Katy try to be serious and mature, but ended up with lyrics like 'i'm my mothers daughter' and 'Marylin Monroe in a monster truck', this lyrics could only be compared with J.Lo's 'i feel good cause i don't feel bad'. Katy should put this in a box and go looking for her next record.

Sonoramente poluído e confuso, não tem personalidade e muito menos uma mensagem e um álbum amador pra uma cantora que esta em sua zona de conforto sem astucia para se arrisca ou compor seu próprio álbum.

Witness is an album full of bizarre choices--both the DJ Mustard and Hot Chip-produced tracks are, for some reason, ballads--that has the inherent appeal of a spectacular failure, but that’s about it.

This Album was really terrible and disappointing. Compared to her previous work it really was a downgrade, The only songs I did enjoy were the singles that were already out the rest of the album feels unfinished. I don't recommend this album to anyone hopefully Ms Perry's next album gives us something more and doesn't keep us waiting 4 years again for unsatisfactory & substandard music.

Not only are most of the songs a disaster, but earlier she had an interview and said that she would not make any songs about any one person, but clearly she was lying when Swish Swish came out which completely dissed Taylor Swift. Only a few songs on the album Witness seemed appeasing to me and when I saw a few, I mean like only two or three of them. I read somewhere that she had coined this phase of her career as "Purposeful Pop". Well if this is what "Purposeful Pop" sounds like then please pass me the club while I bash its head in.

If this doesn't sink her career then I don't know what will.

"Witness" is her worst album to date. Songs like 'Roulette' and 'Save As Draft' sound very similar to Lady Gaga's 'I Like It Rough' and 'Angel Down'. Furthermore, her voice sounds so auto-tuned in some songs. Katy could've done it so much better.

It is a hugely flawed record, and it feels like each song suffers from a different type of mistake. While some songs start up real good but fall short the second their chorus hits ('Pendulum', 'Tsunami', 'Roulette'), other songs have very shallow lyrics, so superficial. they sound like they've been written by a 10-year-old (for example: 'I saw a balloon floating away/ I wondered did someone let go, or did they lose it?' on 'Miss You More'). Next to that, there are tracks that are just full-on annoying ('Mind Maze' comes to mind). KP tries to channel 'Ghost' by singing songs like 'Save As Draft', or tries to end the record with 'Into Me You See' on a similar note to that of 'By the Grace of God', but she just fails to do so. The only aspect remotely close to being very-good on this record is the production that glows from start to finish. Highlights are lead single 'Chained to the Rhythm', and probably the title track 'Witness'.
The problem is that Perry's still trying to imitate her own work on 2010-pop-perfection-album 'Teenage Dream', but the outcome turns out to be 'Witness': a bunch of un-related non-cohesive wanna-be tracks influenced more by the A-Listers who worked on them, than by Perry herself.

Witness is the follow-up to Perry's Prism, an album with great music and many hits but this time Miss Perry failed to deliver any of two mentioned. Witness contains two good songs, which are Deja Vu and Power, the rest is sadly trash. Without Dr.Luke Miss Perry's music sounds like a fart from one of Kesha'a cats. This is a terrible album, trashy vocals, homophobic and racist lyrics and therefor I have to give Hitless (no hits so far) a bad score. Expand

The all-new ‘woke’ Katy isn’t just about giving you decent things to dance to on a Friday night or up-tempo fluff for your gym playlist. Instead, she’s pushing the sleek, chart-friendly empowerment of ‘Roar’ and ‘Firework’ even further, into socially aware electropop territory, like ‘The Fame’ period Lady Gaga doing an evening class at SOAS.

Witness is by far the most underwhelming album the pop star has released. It's unfortunate that the album suffers from a lack of direction and bland melodies. It’s a real shame Witness has come out as a bit of a disjointed mess, as there’s a decent record somewhere in there, but it gets lost in the fog of endless guest productions and co-writes that miss the point entirely.
