The 5 EPs - Disco Inferno
September 19, 2011
After releasing a 7", 12", and album of deeply derivative but occasionally excellent post-punk, Disco Inferno turned a corner and went on a remarkable run of five EPs -- one for Cheree, four for Rough Trade -- issued from 1992 through 1994. Those releases, inspired by the sampling likes of Young Gods and the Bomb Squad yet reminiscent of neither and utterly unique, are compiled in full on this disc. These short-form releases, like the band's second and third albums (D.I. Go Pop, Technicolour), largely deal in turbulent collisions of layered noise, heaving rhythms, and buried melodies. They fluctuate in feeling from eerie and unsettling ("A Rock to Cling To," "From the Devil to the Deep Blue Sky") to merrily cartoonish ("A Night on the Tiles," "It's a Kid's World"). Crause's sharp lyrics are often delivered with a casual viciousness, articulating equal levels of disdain toward racism and romance, with the latter attacked over gorgeously ringing/rippling guitars for "Love Stepping Out," a lonely hearts club fantasy: "Punching women, kicking men/Five on one, one on ten/These fuckers getting all that they deserve/It's just tricks with mirrors." This compilation was long overdue but handled with great care; the artwork falls in line with the original releases, and the booklet contains a lengthy essay along with press clippings. Disco Inferno were borderline genius, but it's not hard to understand why Blur and the Cranberries reached more ears. ~ Andy Kellman

Seven - DJ Cam
October 24, 2011
Alongside DJ Shadow and DJ Krush, Parisian producer Laurent Daumail, aka DJ Cam, was at the forefront of the '90s ambient hip-hop scene, but unlike his peers, has seemed content to spend the best part of the last decade focusing more on various remixes, compilations, and collaborations than any of his own material. Finally returning to the studio, the appropriately titled Seven, his seventh album, which arrives seven years after 2004's Liquid Hip Hop, continues to pursue the intimate chillout sounds of his heyday, as evident on "Love," a gorgeously understated slice of minimalist trip-hop featuring the captivating tones of Massive Attack vocalist Nicolette, the sun-kissed acid jazz of closer "A Loop," and the Bristolian urban soul of "1988." But elsewhere, the Los Angeles-based DJ showcases a newfound cinematic sensibility that prevents the record from becoming merely an "I Love the '90s" affair, as on "Dreamcatcher," which fuses Blade Runner-style synths with skittering breakbeats, sci-fi bleeps, and an anthemic vocal house loop, and the unsettling instrumental title track, which is underpinned by an eerie string section that could have been lifted from a Hitchcock movie. Occasionally, the album fails to avoid descending into coffee-table music territory, such as the languid jazz of opener "California Dreamin" and the meandering new age-inspired "Fontainbleau," both of which wander aimlessly around at a snail's pace without providing anything of note. But while Seven isn't quite worth the seven-year wait, it's a promising comeback suggesting that DJ Cam has the potential to restore his former glories. ~ Jon O'Brien

The Crack Capone - DJ Roc
November 9, 2010
A wonderfully wobbly set of tracks that take the genre of juke -- think house-meets-ghetto-tech-meets-dubstep -- into new territories, DJ Roc’s The Crack Capone is an amazing headphone album. It’s probably an amazing dancefloor effort, too, but most won’t have the footwork skills to keep up with the Chicago DJ’s creations, which throb with ghetto-tech’s depth and dubstep’s darkness while brittle, familiar samples of folks like Junior Reid (“One Bloodâ€) and Kid Cudi (“I Make Her Sayâ€) up the hypnosis. Some tracks come with a healthy sense of humor -- the sample on “I Don’t Like the Look of It†is totally Squaresville, while “Let’s Get it Started†mashes the Twilight Zone and Soulja Boy -- still others invoke paranoia, like the “Johnny Wasâ€-sampling “Shot Down†which is a draining epic at over three-and-a-half minutes. Most of these rapid shots to the dome barely cross the two-minute mark, but The Crack Capone puts it all in a sensible order, making one feel like they’re listening to a mix album if they don’t mind the gaps. Turn it up and submit. ~ David Jeffries
