The project is packed with enough ammunition to hit that mark.

Like all of neo soul’s greats, BJ seamlessly blurs R&B’s past and present, but 1123 tends to sidestep the most obvious tropes, both modern and retro. ... In its final stretch, though, 1123 does toss out a few of-the-moment tracks that radio might be able to work with.

A quarter of an hour shorter than In My Mind, 1123 is nonetheless overloaded with cosmetic, stream-baiting features and disruptive diversions. ... It's no coincidence that the album's hottest three-song stretch involves no guests and plays to BJ's strengths with slow-bumping retro-modern grooves that are played and programmed.

A few times, 1123 is too stuck in its own sensibilities for its own good — the inspirational, album-closing “Reach” is not much more heartening than any inspirational track you’ve heard over the past five years — but if BJ insists on staying within the margins, at least the borders are neatly kept

There's really only one or two tracks that may seem like filler but the rest is amazing. The last track actually sounds like a lead to something greater, so I'm looking forward to future projects.
