Fennesz also instills a similar dichotomy with his score, as beautifully melancholic passages on grand piano and guitar interweave and flutter through the ether of his static-encrusted digital ambiance over 15 compositions of unsettling serenity.

Much of this material is short and fragmented, creating moments that flicker into life then vanish before achieving full impact.

Though AUN isn't always interesting, it is a cohesive collection, and I don't doubt for a moment its suitability as the score for Honetschläger's film.

The hazy white noise loops of 2008's Black Sea stripped out in favour of choral drones and soothing gamelan chimes, perfectly suited to the film's meditative, valedictory tone. [Sep 2012, p.95]

This is a good, not great record, which you probably don't need to hear, unless you're already immersed in Fennesz's world. [Oct 2012, p.79]

There is no direct need to see the film to appreciate the record for its own merits-especially if hushed dark atmospheres and seemingly (but probably not) random key plinks are your thing.
